  • Galápagos tomatoes are evolving in ‘reverse’

Galápagos tomatoes are evolving in ‘reverse’

On the younger, black-rock islands of the Galápagos archipelago, wild-growing tomatoes are doing something peculiar. They’re shedding millions of years of evolution, reverting to a more primitive genetic state that resurrects ancient chemical defenses.

These tomatoes, which descended from South American ancestors likely brought over by birds, have quietly started making a toxic molecular cocktail that hasn’t been seen in millions of years, one that resembles compounds found in eggplant, not the modern tomato.

In a study in Nature Communications, scientists at the University of California, Riverside, describe this unexpected development as a possible case of “reverse evolution,” a term that tends to be controversial amongst evolutionary biologists.

That’s because evolution isn’t supposed to have a rewind button. It’s generally viewed as a one-way march toward adaptation, not a circular path back to traits once lost. While organisms sometimes re-acquire features similar to those of their ancestors, doing so through the exact same genetic pathways is rare and difficult to prove.

However, reversal is what these tomato plants appear to be doing.

“It’s not something we usually expect,” says Adam Jozwiak, a molecular biochemist at UC Riverside and lead author of the study. “But here it is, happening in real time, on a volcanic island.”

The key players in this chemical reversal are alkaloids. Tomatoes, potatoes, eggplants, and other nightshades all make these bitter molecules that act like built-in pesticides, deterring insect predators, fungi, and grazing animals.

While the Galápagos are famous as a place where animals have few predators, the same is not necessarily true for plants. Thus, the need to produce the alkaloids.

The researchers began this project because alkaloids in crops can be problematic. In high concentrations they are toxic to humans, hence the desire to understand their production and reduce them in the edible parts of fruits and tubers.

“Our group has been working hard to characterize the steps involved in alkaloid synthesis, so that we can try and control it,” Jozwiak says.

What makes these Galápagos tomatoes interesting isn’t just that they make alkaloids, but that they’re making the wrong ones, or at least, ones that haven’t been seen in tomatoes since their early evolutionary days.

The researchers analyzed more than 30 tomato samples collected from distinct geographic locations across the islands. They found that plants on eastern islands produced the same alkaloids found in modern cultivated tomatoes. But on western islands, the tomatoes were churning out a different version with the molecular fingerprint of eggplant relatives from millions of years ago.

That difference comes down to stereochemistry, or how atoms are arranged in three-dimensional space. Two molecules can contain exactly the same atoms but behave entirely differently depending on how those atoms are arranged.

To figure out how the tomatoes made the switch, the researchers examined the enzymes that assemble these alkaloid molecules. They discovered that changing just four amino acids in a single enzyme was enough to flip the molecule’s structure from modern to ancestral.

They proved it by synthesizing the genes coding for these enzymes in the lab and inserting them into tobacco plants, which promptly began producing the old compounds.

The pattern wasn’t random. It aligned with geography. Tomatoes on the eastern, older islands, which are more stable and biologically diverse, made modern alkaloids. Those on the younger, western islands where the landscape is more barren and the soil is less developed, had adopted the older chemistry.

The researchers suspect the environment on the newer islands may be driving the reversal.

“It could be that the ancestral molecule provides better defense in the harsher western conditions,” Jozwiak says.

To verify the direction of the change, the team did a kind of evolutionary modeling that uses modern DNA to infer the traits of long-extinct ancestors. The tomatoes on the younger islands matched what those early ancestors likely produced.

Still, calling this “reverse evolution” is bold. While the reappearance of old traits has been documented in snakes, fish, and even bacteria, it’s rarely this clear, or this chemically precise.

“Some people don’t believe in this,” Jozwiak says. “But the genetic and chemical evidence points to a return to an ancestral state. The mechanism is there. It happened.”

And this kind of change might not be limited to plants. If it can happen in tomatoes, it could theoretically happen in other species, too. “I think it could happen to humans,” he says. “It wouldn’t happen in a year or two, but over time, maybe, if environmental conditions change enough.”

Jozwiak doesn’t study humans, but the premise that evolution is more flexible than we think is serious. Traits long lost can re-emerge. Ancient genes can reawaken. And as this study suggests, life can sometimes find a way to move forward by reaching into the past.

“If you change just a few amino acids, you can get a completely different molecule,” Jozwiak says.

“That knowledge could help us engineer new medicines, design better pest resistance, or even make less toxic produce. But first, we have to understand how nature does it. This study is one step toward that.”

  • Which Is a More Accurate Predictor of Health?

Which Is a More Accurate Predictor of Health?

Compared to BMI scores, body-fat percentages were a stronger predictor of the 15-year mortality risk of young adults, a new study found. Thana Prasongsin/Getty Images
    • A new study reports that measurements that detect body fat are a more accurate predictor of mortality risk than body mass index (BMI).
    • Experts say BMI doesn’t differentiate between weight attributed to body fat and weight attributed to muscle.
    • They do note that BMI is easier to calculate and less expensive than many body fat measurements.

Body mass index (BMI) only tells part of the story when it comes to determining your overall health and death risk.

Compared to BMI scores, researchers said body-fat percentages were a stronger predictor of the 15-year mortality risk of young adults ages 20 to 49.

They reported that people with high body fat are 78% more likely to die from any cause compared to people without high body fat.

In addition, those with elevated body fat percentages have a 262% higher chance of dying from heart disease.

The researchers said BMI measurements did not detect these risks, but other measurements did. These included bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), which uses electrical current to measure body fat, muscle mass, and water weight.

“Body fat percentage is a better predictor of 15-year mortality risk factor in young adults than BMI. A move to using [body fat percentages] rather than BMI may change how we measure body composition for risk stratification,” the researchers wrote.

Experts not involved in the study say the results are not surprising.

“Previous studies have shown similar results — measuring body fat, especially fat deep in the belly which is close to organs, more metabolically active and plays a greater metabolic risk, may be a better assessment than simply a number on the scale which cannot assess variations between muscle, fat, water, etc.,” said Kristin Kirkpatrick, RD, the president of KAK Consulting and a dietitian at the Cleveland Clinic Dept of Department of Wellness & Preventive Medicine.

The concept of body mass index (BMI) was developed in 1832 by Belgian mathematician Lambert Adolphe Jacques Quetelet.

It’s calculated by basically dividing a person’s weight by their height squared. There are free calculators online to help do the math.

Using that scale, medical professionals classify body composition of adults in the following way.

    • less than 18.5 — underweight
    • 18.5 to 24.9 — healthy weight
    • 25 to 29.9 — overweight
    • 30 or greater — obesity

Obesity is classified by three subtypes using BMI:

    • class 1 obesity — 30 to 34.9
    • class 2 obesity — 35 to 39.9
    • class 3 obesity — 40 or higher

Ali said the advantages of measuring BMI are that it’s a well-known gauge that is easy to calculate, relatively inexpensive, and generally accepted by insurance.

Some past studies have shown that BMI can be a predictor of chronic diseases such as:

    • type 2 diabetes
    • cancer
    • kidney disease

Mir Ali, MD, a general surgeon, bariatric surgeon, and the medical director of MemorialCare Surgical Weight Loss Center at Orange Coast Medical Center in California, said BMI doesn’t distinguish between weight obtained by muscle and weight due to body fat.

“It doesn’t take into account the differences between fat and muscle in the body,” Ali told Healthline. “BMI is not necessarily the best measurement for body composition — it’s more of a guidance.”

Becca Krukowski, PhD, a professor of public health services at the University of Virginia and a fellow at the Obesity Society, said BMI measurements have several shortcomings.

“BMI is widely used in clinical settings because it is easy to compute,” she told Healthline.

“However, BMI is a rough measure of body composition, and individuals can be misclassified with overweight or obesity if they are extremely muscular. In addition, someone with a BMI in the ‘normal’ category could still have a high body fat percentage, which still increases their risk of many chronic diseases,” Krukowski continued.

    Kirkpatrick expressed similar concerns.

“BMI may offer a general assessment — and the location of fat in the body matters related to risk, [but] the major disadvantage [of BMI] is not being able to assess health risk simply based on the number,” she told Healthline.

This system works by sending small electric currents throughout the body. Electrodes on the skin measures these currents after they pass through body tissues. These currents move easier through muscle than fat.

Kirkpatrick said these types of body fat measurements provide a better overall picture.

“[Body fat] assessment (and looking at where fat is stored) can help assess risk,” she explained.

“For example, fat stored in the belly is much more dangerous in terms of metabolic risk than fat that is stored in the thighs and buttocks. Genetics play a role as well, with some individuals having more risk based on other factors.”

Ali agreed. “Body fat may be a better measurement of overall health,” he said, noting the disadvantages of these types of measurements are that they can be more expensive and they aren’t as easy to calculate as BMI.

Krukowski noted similar limitations. “Each of these methods have their pros and cons,” she said.

“Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scans are very accurate, but quite expensive and not available in many clinical settings. Although waist circumference measurement can be quite helpful in predicting disease risk, it is very complicated to do correctly. Finally, as the authors note in the article, bioelectrical impedance analysis machines have not always been able to provide accurate measurement of body fat percentage,” Krukowski continued.

“However, this article indicates that perhaps this bioelectrical impedance analysis technology has improved enough to seriously consider this technology in estimating body fat percentage,” she added.

Ali noted there are simple ways for people to assess their overall health, too. For example, if you have trouble walking up stairs or standing up after kneeling, your overall health may not be where it should be.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 40% of U.S. adults have obesity.

The condition has a higher prevalence in people in certain groups, including non-Hispanic Black adults and people with less education.

There are many health risks associated with obesity. Among them:

    • heart disease
    • stroke
    • high blood pressure
    • liver disease
    • certain cancers
    • pregnancy complications

Experts say you can lower your risk of obesity by following a healthy lifestyle of exercise and diet.

For exercise, it’s recommended to aim for at least 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity.

    For diet, experts advise:

    • filling half your plate with vegetables
    • eating more whole grains
    • choosing lean sources of protein (i.e., chicken and seafood)
    • avoiding fried foods
    • avoiding sugary foods
    • avoiding or abstaining from alcohol

“Body weight is just one component of fitness and health,” said Kirkpatrick. “Dietary patterns, sleep, exercise habits, genetics, and environment all may play a role in an individual’s health status.”

Mariah Carey Confirms New Album Is ‘Finished’

Mariah Carey confirmed Monday that she’s finished her upcoming 16th studio album.

She sat down with Zane Lowe and Ebro Darden at the new Apple Music Studios in Culver City, California, during a special live broadcast to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the streaming service. The three briefly chatted about her latest single “Type Dangerous,” which Lowe described as a “heavy record, it’s got real weight to it” before asking if fans can expect more new music from her soon.

“I’m trying not to tell too much about the new album. ‘It’s a special occasion/ Mimi’s emancipation’ — that’s a lyric from one of my songs,” Carey said quoting 2005’s “It’s Like That.” “What is next? The album coming out. I don’t wanna tell too much about it because I just don’t want to reveal the whole thing. It’s finished.”

Mimi also revealed there are 11 or 12 songs featured on the full-length project. “We got some Mariah ballads,” she told Darden, adding that “a second single is coming soon. I’m very excited about it. It’s very summery. I like the beat as well.”

Carey released “Type Dangerous” at the top of last month via gamma., the company founded by former Apple Music executive Larry Jackson in 2023. “Type Dangerous,” which samples Eric B. & Rakim‘s 1986 track “Eric B. Is President,” became her 50th Billboard Hot 100 hit and hit the top 10 of R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay. She performed the song alongside Rakim at the 2025 BET Awards last month, when she received her first BET Award ever: the Ultimate Icon Award.

“I’ve always loved ‘Eric B. Is President.’ It wasn’t something like, ‘Oh, I’m gonna flip this’ — I just wouldn’t think of doing it,” she explained to Darden and Lowe. “But then we were in this restaurant in Aspen and they had different music on, and they played ‘Eric B. Is President’ and I was like, ‘Oh my gosh! I love this song!’ We ended up in the studio a couple months later and we did it.”

Chance the Rapper also briefly chatted with Lowe and Darden about his new music coming out soon. Ciara, Dominic Fike, Fuerza Regida, FLO, Hit Boy, Kamasi Washington, Kevin Abstract, kwn, Teezo Touchdown, Tommy Richman, Vince Staples and many more celebrated Apple Music’s 10th anniversary at the company’s newly opened studio space on Monday night.

  • Here’s What Mark Zuckerberg Is Offering Top AI Talent

Here’s What Mark Zuckerberg Is Offering Top AI Talent

As Mark Zuckerberg staffs up Meta’s new superintelligence lab, he’s offered top tier research talent pay packages of up to $300 million over four years, with more than $100 million in total compensation for the first year, WIRED has learned.

Meta has made at least 10 staggeringly high offers to OpenAI staffers, sources say. One high ranking researcher was pitched on the role of chief scientist but turned it down, according to multiple sources with direct knowledge of the negotiations. While the pay package includes equity, in the first year the stock vests immediately, sources say.

“That’s about how much it would take for me to go work at Meta,” says one OpenAI staffer who spoke with WIRED on the condition of anonymity as they aren’t authorized to speak publicly about the company. Other employees said that they were weighing the money against the potential impact they could have at Meta in comparison to OpenAI. Several believed their impact would be greater at OpenAI.

“These statements are untrue – the size and structure of these compensation packages have been misrepresented all over the place,” says Meta spokesperson Andy Stone. “Some people have chosen to greatly exaggerate what’s happening for their own purposes.”

A senior engineer who spoke to WIRED confirmed their pay was around $850,000 per year at Meta—an impressive sum that pales in comparison to the packages currently on offer. Those in the pay band above this engineer (E7’s, in Meta terms) make on average $1.54 million a year, according to user data submitted on Levels.FYI.

Andrew Bosworth, chief technology officer at Meta, said that not everyone is getting a $100 million offer during a Q&A with employees last week. “Look, you guys, the market’s hot. It’s not that hot. Okay? So it’s just a lie,” he said. “We have a small number of leadership roles that we’re hiring for, and those people do command a premium.” He added that the $100 million is not a sign-on bonus, but “all these different things” and noted OpenAI is countering the offers.

As a point of comparison, Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, received $79.1 million in total compensation in 2024, most of it in stock, according to a financial filing by the company. Dara Khosrowshahi, the CEO of Uber, made roughly $39.4 million (again, mostly in stock) the same year.

On Monday, Mark Zuckerberg sent a note to Meta staff introducing the new superintelligence team. Alexandr Wang, formerly the CEO of Scale AI, is now Meta’s chief AI officer, Zuckerberg said. He’s joined by Nat Friedman who previously led GitHub. Together, Wang and Friedman will colead an organization Zuckerberg dubbed the Meta Superintelligence Labs. The company did not name a chief scientist or a chief research officer as part of the announcement. Neither Wang nor Friedman are thought of as researchers, at least in the traditional sense. None of the OpenAI staffers who left for Meta received the $300 million offer, according to a source with knowledge of the contracts.

Focus remains on the ECB Forum and US jobs

The Greenback dipped to new multi-year troughs before attempting a mild rebound on Tuesday, as investors continued to assess the participation of Chief Powell at the ECB Forum, while fresh tensions emerged on the trade front in anticipation of the July 9 tariffs deadline.

Here’s what to watch on Wednesday, July 2:

The US Dollar Index (DXY) added to the ongoing lower leg and receded to new multi-year lows in the sub-97.00 neighbourhood. The usual weekly MBA Mortgage Applications are due, followed by Challenger Job Cuts, the ADP Employment Change report, and the EIA’s weekly report on US crude oil stockpiles.

EUR/USD halted its multi-day positive streak shortly after reaching fresh yearly peaks above the 1.1800 level. The ECB Forum on Central Banking will precede the release of the EMU’s Unemployment Rate.

GBP/USD resumed its decline soon after hitting new YTD tops near 1.3790, just to end the day with humble gains in the low 1.3700s. Next on tap across the Channel will be the BoE’s DMP Survey and Credit Conditions Survey, seconded by the final S&P Global Services PMI, all due on July 3.

USD/JPY remained on the back foot and retreated to the 142.70 region, or four-week lows. Next on the Japanese docket will be the weekly Foreign Bond Investment figures on July 3.

Following its risk-related peers, AUD/USD hit new tops just below the 0.6600 barrier before succumbing to some modest downside pressure. The Ai Group survey is due alongside Building Permits, Retail Sales and Private House Approvals.

WTI prices maintained their multi-day erratic performance on Tuesday, always around the $65.00 mark per barrel as traders remained prudent ahead of the OPEC+ meeting and rising expectations surrounding the trade front.

Gold prices rose markedly and revisited the $3,360 zone per troy ounce, or multi-day highs, following the increasing caution around the US trade policy and the vacillating Greenback. Silver prices extended Monday’s uptick to two-day highs around $36.60 per ounce.

The Java House Grand Prix of Monterey, which will take place July 25-27 at the iconic road course, marks the only visit to Northern California for North America’s premier open-wheel series. This is Java House’s first event title sponsorship.

“We are delighted to welcome Java House as a sponsor for our INDYCAR event weekend,” said Mel Harder, president and general manager of WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. “Cars and coffee are a classic combination, and we’re excited to share this fantastic coffee with our guests.”

Race fans can enjoy samples of Java House’s full line of beverages, including its Amazingly Smooth cold brew coffees, lattes, teas, hydration drinks and more, throughout the race weekend. Java House products also will be integrated throughout all hospitality areas, including premium luxury suites and club style pavilions. The fun won’t stop at the track, as Java House Cold Brew Espresso Martinis will be served at select restaurants in the Monterey area leading up to and during the race.

In addition to its support of the Monterey event, Java House serves as a primary sponsor on Alexander Rossi’s No. 20 and Christian Rasmussen’s No. 21 Ed Carpenter Racing (ECR) Chevrolets throughout the 2025 season.

“We are thrilled for Java House to become the title sponsor of the Grand Prix of Monterey,” said Ted Gelov, owner and CEO of Heartland Food Products Group. “INDYCAR has been an outstanding platform to grow our brand and connect with a passionate fan base. This partnership continues our commitment to expanding Java House’s presence on a national stage – with more big things to come in 2025 and beyond.”
