Barcelona strips Ter Stegen of captaincy for refusing to sign medical report

MADRID (AP) — Barcelona has temporarily stripped goalkeeper Marc-André Ter Stegen of the captaincy over his refusal to sign a medical report about his back injury.

The club said Thursday that central defender Ronald Araujo will act as first-team captain until further notice.

“Following the disciplinary proceedings opened against player Marc-André ter Stegen, and until this matter is definitively resolved, the club, by mutual agreement with the sporting direction and the coaching staff, has decided to temporarily withdraw his role as first-team captain,” Barcelona said in a statement.

The club had opened a disciplinary proceeding against the goalkeeper on Tuesday after discrepancies about the recovery time for the lower back surgery that Ter Stegen successfully underwent last week.

Barcelona needed him to sign the injury report so it could be sent to the Spanish league in order to clear some salary-cap space and allow the club to more easily register other players without breaching financial fair play rules.

Ter Stegen said ahead of the surgery that the recovery time would be about three months. The club did not give an official timetable for the recovery process, saying only that the operation was “successful” and that “his recovery will determine when he can return.”

Depending on the length of the recovery process, Barcelona could clear a percentage of Ter Stegen’s salary from its cap, making more room to add other players to the squad.

The league has to evaluate the report before approving the official time of recovery.

The club signed Espanyol goalkeeper Joan García in June. Its other goalkeepers are veteran Wojciech Szczęsny and Iñaki Peña.

Ter Stegen met briefly with Barcelona officials this week, according to Spanish media.

The 33-year-old German goalkeeper missed nearly all of last season because of a ruptured tendon in his knee, and in 2023 he missed about two months because of another back operation. Peña and the 35-year-old Szczęsny started in place of Ter Stegen last season.

Barcelona, the defending Spanish league champion, arrived back in Spain on Tuesday after completing a preseason tour in Asia.

  • Marc-Andre ter Stegen has not spoken with Barcelona, unfazed by captaincy pressure

Marc-Andre ter Stegen has not spoken with Barcelona, unfazed by captaincy pressure

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen has no intention  of changing his stance on his dispute with the club. On Thursday afternoon, the club announced that they were removing the captaincy from ter Stegen until their disciplinary proceedings against him were resolved.

The 33-year-old was not expected at the club’s training facilities on Thursday, but spent an hour and a half doing some recovery work, as he rehabilitates his back following surgery last week. The club did not speak with him during that time, and did not communicate their decision to him, as per Gerard Romero. It was also noted that the squad did not vote on new captains for the upcoming season.

Ter Stegen will not cede to Barcelona pressure

The dispute surrounds ter Stegen’s decision not to give consent to Barcelona to share his medical report with La Liga, and by proxy, prevent them from activating the injury rule to help them with player registrations. Barcelona are once again struggling in that regard, but were ter Stegen to sign off on the document, they would be able to use at least 50% of his salary limit space to help register Joan Garcia – his replacement.

Ter Stegen has no intention of altering his stance say Marca, whether that be regarding his medical report, or potentially leaving the club this summer. They also note that ter Stegen, until Barcelona’s announcement had not received notice of the disciplinary proceedings, which some suspect is a means of pressuring ter Stegen.

Ter Stegen unfazed by captaincy decision

Equally, ter Stegen is paying little notice to the decision to remove the captaincy. The 33-year-old feels that his role in the dressing room will not be altered by the decision, and that he still has the support of his colleagues. It is a dressing room containing several players that have been pressured by the club in recent years to leave, including Frenkie de Jong and Raphinha.

Last week as many as six Barcelona players came out in support of ter Stegen as captain. His intention is to fight for his place when he recovers, despite reportedly being told that he will be third choice behind Wojciech Szczesny and Garcia.

Does Diet or Exercise Drive Obesity? New Research Weighs In

They say “abs are made in the kitchen” and “you can’t outrun a bad diet”—and a recent study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences suggests there’s science to back up those cliches.

Diet—not physical inactivity—seems to be the primary driver of the obesity epidemic, according to the new research.

“This is not saying that physical activity isn’t important. It absolutely is,” said Amanda McGrosky, PhD, an assistant professor of biology at Elon University who co-authored the new study. But if weight loss is your goal, her research suggests the gym may not hold the solution.

Both diet and exercise are important to overall health and wellness. But when it comes to weight management, does one matter more than the other?

McGrosky and her colleagues set out to answer that question. They compared data on daily calorie burn, body fat percentage, and body mass index (BMI) from more than 4,000 people living across six continents. Some were highly active farmers or hunter-gatherers, while others lived in industrialized nations and were far more sedentary.

People in industrialized nations tended to have higher body masses, BMIs, and body fat percentages, they concluded. But after adjusting for body size, the researchers found that they were burning only slightly fewer calories per day than people in less-developed areas—even though their lifestyles were much less active.

“We didn’t see [big] differences in total energy expenditure across populations, but we do see this increase in body fat,” McGrosky told Health. “If we’re not changing the number of calories out, we have to be changing the number of calories in.”

In other words: Obesity may be on the rise in some countries not because people are failing to burn enough calories, but because they are consuming too many.

The study relied on a mix of observation and modeling, meaning it can’t definitively prove cause and effect. Still, outside experts say there’s plenty of other research to back its conclusions.

“Almost everyone that comes to me and wants to talk about their weight begins by talking about their efforts at physical activity,” said Max Petersen, MD, PhD, an assistant professor in the Washington University in St. Louis Medicine Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism & Lipid Research, who was not involved in the new study. “And yet it is abundantly clear from decades of research that physical activity really makes a minor contribution to our weight.”

Not all studies have found that diet drives obesity more than inactivity. One study from 2014 came to the exact opposite conclusion, and other researchers have found that a combined approach—focused on both diet and exercise—is the best system for sustained weight loss.

But the bulk of evidence supports a diet-first approach to weight management, agreed Rekha Kumar, MD, MS, an endocrinologist and obesity medicine specialist at Weill Cornell Medicine who was also not involved in the new study.

“My first impression [of the new study] was, ‘I think we already know this,’” Kumar said. The study’s breadth and international design, looking at populations across the economic spectrum, only strengthen its conclusions, she added.

While the study argues that diet is the more important driver of obesity, researchers are still working to understand why, McGrosky said. One likely explanation ties back to the body’s natural ability to regulate energy usage.

“Even when people are very active, their bodies become more efficient,” Kumar told Health. “Your body eventually figures out how to adapt to increased physical activity—so over time, people who continually increase their physical activity don’t proportionately burn more and more calories.”

On the flip side, McGrosky said, the body may find ways to burn extra calories if you’re not moving much throughout the day.

Plus, it simply takes more energy to power a larger body compared to a smaller one, McGrosky said, which helps explain why a population made up of larger individuals burns roughly as many calories as one with smaller but very active people.

The take-home message isn’t that exercise doesn’t matter. On the contrary, exercise is clearly linked to a wide range of physical and mental health benefits. Petersen called it “the most powerful life-extending intervention we have in medicine—more powerful than any drug, any pill, any injection that we can offer.”

When it comes to weight management, however, McGrosky’s study and others suggest it’s best to focus on the number of calories you’re consuming, rather than the number you’re burning. “If the diet’s not conducive to weight loss, there’s no physical activity regimen that can override that,” Kumar said.

To improve your diet, experts typically recommend eating a mix of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts, legumes, and other lean proteins, while cutting down on ultra-processed foods. Research suggests people are more likely to overeat and gain weight when they consume lots of ultra-processed foods.

Individuals shouldn’t be responsible for making these changes alone, though. Governments and public health officials also have an important role to play. “It’s a lot easier or cheaper to buy a bag of chips, sometimes, than a bag of carrots,” McGrosky said—so at the systemic level, it’s important to make fresh, minimally processed foods readily accessible, available, and affordable.

  • In Israel’s largest gas deal, Leviathan partners ink $35 billion export deal with Egypt

In Israel’s largest gas deal, Leviathan partners ink $35 billion export deal with Egypt

Partners in Israel’s Leviathan reservoir on Thursday inked a $35 billion deal to supply natural gas to Egypt, in the largest export deal in the country’s history.

Israel’s NewMed Energy, formerly Delek Drilling (part of Yitzhak Tshuva’s Delek Group), which owns a 45.3 percent stake in Leviathan, off the country’s Mediterranean coast, said the partners will sell a total of 130 billion cubic meters (bcm) of natural gas to Egypt through 2040, or until all of the contract quantities are fulfilled.

The deal is expected to funnel hundreds of millions of shekels in revenues from gas royalties and taxes to the country’s state coffers.

“This is the most strategically important export deal to ever occur in the eastern Mediterranean, and strengthens Egypt’s position as the most significant hub in the region,” said NewMed CEO Yossi Abu. “This deal, made possible by our strong regional partnerships, will unlock further regional export opportunities, once again proving that natural gas and the wider energy industry can be an anchor for collaboration.”

Natural gas from Leviathan, one of the world’s largest deep-water gas discoveries, started to flow to the Israeli domestic market in December 2019. The partners in the Leviathan reservoir began exporting natural gas to Egypt in January 2020 after signing a deal for 60 bcm, which is expected to be supplied by the early 2030s. To date, Leviathan has supplied 23.5 bcm of gas to the Egyptian market.

The first phase of the new export deal for the sale of 20 bcm is expected to begin in 2026, which will boost annual gas supply from the Leviathan reservoir to Egypt from 4.7 bcm per year currently to 6.7 bcm.

In the second phase, starting in 2029, an additional 110 bcm of gas will be supplied following the completion of the Leviathan production expansion plan and the construction of a new transmission pipeline from Israel to Egypt. As a result, the volume of annual gas supply will increase to about 12 bcm to 13 bcm.

The deal comes as growing domestic energy needs have sparked heated discussions over natural gas exports. Earlier this year, the Finance Ministry warned that Israel is poised to face a natural gas shortage in the next 25 years as domestic energy needs are growing faster than forecast and gas export sales are robust. A shortfall would lead to higher electricity prices for consumers.

Meanwhile, NewMed stressed that “the deal should pave the way for the expansion of Leviathan and ensure the supply of natural gas to the Israeli market until 2064.”

The Energy Ministry was not immediately available for comment on the export deal.

The Leviathan reservoir contains an estimated 600 bcm of gas located about 120 kilometers west of the port city of Haifa at a water depth of 1.7 kilometers. Other partners in the gas field include US energy giant Chevron, which holds a 39.66% stake, and Ratio Oil Corp., with a 15% stake.

“Since it begun production, Leviathan has brought many benefits both domestically and internationally, and the reservoir’s expansion has been NewMed’s key priority for years,” said Abu.

Amid the ongoing war with the Hamas terror group in Gaza, Israel’s natural gas exports to Egypt and Jordan increased by more than 13% in 2024 year-on-year, accounting for about half of Israeli gas production. State revenue collected from gas royalties soared almost 11% to a record NIS 2.37 billion ($694 million) in 2024.

Since natural gas began being pumped from the Leviathan reservoir in 2019, Israel has collected about NIS 4.2 billion in royalties, including NIS 1.02 billion last year. Since the start of natural gas production in Israel, the state has reaped almost NIS 30 billion from royalties and taxes.

Both Israel and Egypt have emerged as gas exporters in recent years following major offshore discoveries, as Europe is determined to wean itself off dependence on Russian gas imports. Israeli gas accounts for about 15% to 20% of Egypt’s consumption, according to data from the Joint Organisations Data Initiative.

In June 2022, Israel, Egypt and the European Union signed a memorandum of understanding that will see Israel export its natural gas to the bloc for the first time. According to the agreement, Israeli gas will be supplied via Egypt’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) plants to the European Union.

  • Microsoft urges admins to plug severe Exchange security hole (CVE-2025-53786)

Microsoft urges admins to plug severe Exchange security hole (CVE-2025-53786)

“In an Exchange hybrid deployment, an attacker who first gains administrative access to an on-premises Exchange server could potentially escalate privileges within the organization’s connected cloud environment without leaving easily detectable and auditable trace,” Microsoft has announced on Wednesday.

The privilege escalation can be performed by exploiting CVE-2025-53786, a newly disclosed vulnerability that stems from Exchange Server and Exchange Online sharing the same service principal – i.e., the Office 365 Exchange Online application – in hybrid configurations. (The app is used to authenticate and secure the communication between Exchange Server and Exchange Online.)

What is an Exchange hybrid deployment?

A hybrid deployment of Microsoft Exchange Server involves a configuration that connects an on-premises Microsoft Exchange Server environment with Exchange Online, the cloud-based version bundled in most Microsoft 365 subscriptions.

At the moment, organizations that rely on such a deployment can still get away with using the Office 365 Exchange Online application, but not for long: starting this month, Microsoft will begin temporarily blocking Exchange Web Services (EWS) traffic using the Exchange Online shared service principal.

“This is a part of a phased strategy to speed up customer adoption of the dedicated Exchange hybrid app and making our customer’s environments more secure,” Microsoft’s Echange Team explains.

The retirement of Exchange Web Services (EWS) in Exchange Online (in favor of the Microsoft Graph API) and the transition from the Office 365 Exchange Online application to a dedicated Exchange hybrid app has been planned by Microsoft for a while.

The company set the process in motion in earlier this year, by releasing hotfix updates for Exchange Server 2019 CU 14 and CU 15, Exchange Server 2016 CU 23, and Exchange Server Subscription Edition RTM, and urging customers to install them on their on-premises Exchange servers.

Following the installation, they had to run a PowerShell script to switch Exchange hybrid from the “shared principal” configuration to the dedicated Exchange hybrid app, and deploy it.

(The final step of the transition includes changing Exchange hybrid to use Graph API calls and updating dedicated app permissions to a more granular Graph permission model, which must be performed by October 2026.)

But, according to the Exchange team, “even though adoption of server versions that support dedicated hybrid app has been good, the number of customers who have created the dedicated app remains very low.”

And that’s why Microsoft has scheduled two- and three-days-long blocks of Exchange Web Services traffic, which will impact customers who have user mailboxes hosted both in Exchange on-premises and Exchange Online, use features shared by those mailboxes, have not updated to one of the hotfix updates released earlier this year, and have not created and/or enabled the dedicated Exchange hybrid app.

“After October 31, 2025, the use of shared service principal will be permanently blocked. The (…) hybrid features will stop working if the dedicated app is not configured,” the company explained.

    About CVE-2025-53786

As an added “incentive”, Microsoft has revealed the danger stemming from Exchange Server and Exchange Online sharing the same service principal: attackers can use it to stealthily gain access to the organization’s connected cloud environment.

“Successful exploitation of [CVE-2025-53786] requires an attacker to first gain or possess administrator access on an Exchange Server,” Microsoft noted, but that’s a hurdle that can be overcome by sophisticated and persistent attackers.

Thus, the company advises organizations to:

“If you’ve previously configured Exchange hybrid or OAuth authentication between Exchange Server and your Exchange Online organization but no longer use it, make sure to reset the service principal’s keyCredentials,” Microsoft concluded.

    CISA chimes in

According to the security advisory, CVE-2025-53786 is not currently exploited. (Though, if it were, would organizations be able to tell since the privilege escalation can be performed by attackers “without leaving [an] easily detectable and auditable trace”?)

Nevertheless, now that this knowledge is out in the open, some attackers may try their hand at exploiting this weakness.

The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has advised organizations to follow Microsoft’s guidelines and to conclude with running the Microsoft Exchange Health Checker to determine if further steps are required.

“CISA highly recommends entities disconnect public-facing versions of Exchange Server or SharePoint Server that have reached their end-of-life (EOL) or end-of-service from the internet. For example, SharePoint Server 2013 and earlier versions are EOL and should be discontinued if still in use,” the agency added.

The end of extended support for Exchange 2016 and Exchange 2019 is scheduled for October 14, 2025.

Earlier this year, Microsoft also started pushing organizations to upgrade and regularly patch their on-prem Microsoft Exchange servers if they wanted to use th Exchange Online service to deliver email. The company’s stated goal is to raise the security profile of the Exchange ecosystem in face of a significant increase in the frequency of attacks against Exchange servers in the last few years.
