Antihistamines could affect exercise recovery and gains, according to University of Oregon study

A study from a University of Oregon researcher and published in the Journal of Applied Physiology, finds that antihistamines may inhibit muscle growth and recovery from endurance exercise.

While histamine is commonly associated with allergic reactions ranging from a runny nose to anaphylaxis, its place in the body goes beyond that, said study author John Halliwill, a professor of human physiology at UO. It helps the body heal injuries from scrapes to the tiny muscle fiber tears that occur with strenuous exercise.

“Histamine gets released from injured tissue and it plays a primary role in bringing more blood flow to that area, making the blood vessels leak a bit more so that the immune cells can get to where they need to get to repair the injuries,” he told KLCC.

Study participants were split into two groups: a control and a group that took a dose of fexofenadine–a generic of the brand name Allegra–that is roughly triple the over-the-counter dosage. They also took ranitidine, a drug that helps with another histamine response, heartburn and indigestion.

Participants completed 21 endurance training sessions over the course of six weeks, being given either the drugs or placebo afterwards. The control group outperformed those who took the drug at peak power output.

Halliwill said he would like to see further research done to more closely examine what smaller doses do both for allergies and athletic performance.

“We know that allergy symptoms themselves are really disruptive for training and performance,” he said. “So doing some comparisons of how bad it is to suffer the allergies versus taking the minimally needed level of antihistamines to be able to combat that discomfort and perform better without getting into these higher doses.”

Halliwill said he’s also curious to test the reaction of antihistamines in non-endurance forms of exercise such as high intensity or strength-based workouts.

Open Championship joins U.S. Open in leaving prize purse at same level

PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland — The Open Championship is leaving the total prize money at $17 million, the first time since 2012 the R&A has chosen not to increase the purse.

The U.S. Open also did not boost its purse this year at Oakmont.

The winner this week at Royal Portrush will receive $3.1 million, the same amount Xander Schauffele earned last year at Royal Troon.

The four majors had been gradually increasing their prize money in recent years. The Masters increased its prize fund by $1 million to $21 million. The PGA Championship went up $500,000 to $19 million.

The U.S. Open left its purse at $21.5 million, still the highest of the four majors.

It’s an example that the biggest championships are not about prize money, but green jackets and claret jugs.

The Players Championship on the PGA Tour has a $25 million purse. PGA Tour signature events and Saudi-funded LIV Golf events have $20 million prize funds.

Pakistan strongly condemns attack on Iran, backs its right to self-defence: Mohsin Naqvi

TEHRAN (Dunya News): Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has said that Pakistan strongly condemns the recent attack on Iran and fully supports Iran’s right to defend itself.

Speaking at a trilateral conference in Tehran, Naqvi praised the initiative and said such forums are important for regional cooperation.

He highlighted that Pakistani pilgrims visiting Iran and Iraq are of the utmost importance, and their safety and convenience remain a top priority for the government.

“We stand firmly with Iran and will continue to support its right to self-defence,” Naqvi stated, adding that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and other officials have played their due role in supporting Iran during difficult times.

He also congratulated Iran on its recent success and thanked both the Iranian and Iraqi governments for organising the conference and for their continued care of Pakistani pilgrims.

Naqvi emphasised that only registered groups will be allowed to travel to Iran and Iraq for pilgrimage, and strict action will be taken against illegal crossings. He urged group leaders to ensure all pilgrims return safely and responsibly.

  • Five beef patties, four cheese slices, bacon, lettuce, tomato … Burger King’s sumo of a burger enters the ring | Food

Five beef patties, four cheese slices, bacon, lettuce, tomato … Burger King’s sumo of a burger enters the ring | Food

Japan can legitimately claim to be home to some of the best food on the planet. But it usually has little appetite for supersizing it.

That changed on Friday with Burger King’s gargantuan but curiously named Baby Body Burger, tipping the scales at nearly 680g (1.5lb). As part of a collaboration with the Japan Sumo Association, whose July wrestling tournament has just started, the burger checks in at 1,876 calories. Sumo wrestlers would only need about four of these to get their average daily caloric needs; a mere mortal would need just one to one-and-a-half. And, at ¥2,590 (£13.05), it’s nearly twice the price of a one-patty Whopper with cheese.

Skipping breakfast, I went to my local Burger King at about 10.30am to get a jump on the lunch rush to ensure I’d secure one of the limited-edition heavyweights. I was half expecting to see a long queue. But nope, no wait. A few minutes after ordering at the self-service kiosk, my meal arrived.

The burger stack is thick and impressive: five charbroiled beef patties, four cheddar cheese slices, bacon, lettuce, tomato and pickles on a sesame seed bun topped with mayonnaise, mustard and an umami-infused, tomato paste-based Aurora sauce. “This could dislocate my jaw,” joked a woman splitting one with her family.

Dripping with cheese and condiments, the burger makes for a savoury taste mix and looks enticing. But first, more napkins, as this can get messy. (I wore a dark-pink shirt to avoid dripped-condiment shame.) The first round of bites requires sinking the teeth in it at a 45-degree angle, not vertically. Even then, my nose kept acquiring a slathering of sauces until I got past the burger’s edges.

The staff will cut the sumo burger in half, if requested. The denseness and thickness of the five industrial patties, unfortunately, overwhelm the cheddar and sauces beyond the edges. The meat appears to have absorbed my cheese, too. And I had to check to see if there was any bacon. There was. Going towards the centre, it becomes drier. (My recommendation to Burger King would be to offer a side tub of the tangy thousand island-like sauce as a dip.)

Sitting through the lunch service, I only saw one other person eating the sumo burger. But online reaction was overwhelmingly positive, with only some gripes about the high price and even one adding a Whopper side order. Oh, and I did eat it all, although over 30 minutes, along with a few fries and a Coke Zero to maintain my nutritional balance. I can now proudly display my Baby Body Burger sticker with the caption “I did it” that comes with every order.

  • Pakistan, Iran, Iraq pledge unified measures to facilitate pilgrims in landmark trilateral conference

Pakistan, Iran, Iraq pledge unified measures to facilitate pilgrims in landmark trilateral conference

ISLAMABAD, Jul 14 (APP): In a significant diplomatic development, the interior ministers of Pakistan, Iran, and Iraq convened in Tehran for a landmark trilateral conference aimed at enhancing facilitation for religious pilgrims traveling between the three countries.

The conference concluded with a unanimous agreement to take all possible steps to support pilgrims visiting holy sites in Iran and Iraq. A joint working group will be established to oversee coordination and operational matters, ensuring safe and seamless travel for millions of pilgrims, particularly during major religious events such as Arbaeen.

Addressing the conference, Pakistan’s Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi expressed gratitude to Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni for organizing the summit on Pakistan’s request. He emphasized the importance of pilgrims and highlighted Pakistan’s commitment to improving their experience.

Naqvi announced major policy reforms, including a new regulation effective January 1, 2026, under which Pakistani pilgrims will no longer be permitted to travel to Iraq individually. Instead, they must go under the supervision of registered Group Organizers, who will also be responsible for their return. Only those granted special visas by the Iraqi embassy will be exempt from this requirement.

“The new group-based travel system aims to curb illegal entries and extended stays,” Naqvi said, adding that Iraq and Iran have fully endorsed the new framework.

Naqvi also extended congratulations to Iran on its recent military victory, lauding the leadership of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei and reiterating Pakistan’s solidarity during the conflict. “Pakistan openly condemned the attack on Iran and fully supported its right to self-defense,” he stated.

He praised the governments of both Iraq and Iran for their exemplary management of millions of pilgrims annually and reaffirmed Pakistan’s full cooperation in pilgrim-related matters.

Dignitaries attending the conference included Iranian Deputy Interior Minister Ali Akbar Pourjamshidian, Senior Advisor Nader Yar Ahmadi, Iran’s Ambassador to Pakistan Amiri Moghaddam, Pakistan’s Ambassador to Iran Muhammad Mudassir Tipu, Pakistan’s Interior Secretary Khurram Agha, and senior officials from Iraq’s Ministry of Interior.

The conference marks a pivotal step toward regional cooperation on religious tourism, with a focus on safety, regulation, and mutual support.
