  • Authorities seize 18 lions kept as pets – DW – 07/07/2025

Authorities seize 18 lions kept as pets – DW – 07/07/2025

Pakistani authorities confiscated eighteen lions kept illegally as pets in the densely populated Punjab region during a targeted operation, provincial officials said Monday.

Authorities launched a crackdown after a lion escaped from a house in Lahore, the capital of Punjab province, and attacked a woman and two children. The incident, which took place last week, was captured on video.

None of the people suffered life-threatening injuries, according to provincial officials. The lion, which was kept without a license in a house in Lahore, was confiscated.

The lion was sent to a local safari park, according to Mubeen Elahi, director general of the provincial Wildlife and Parks Department.

Police said the owner was arrested.

Keeping big pets considered a status symbol

Keeping a lion at home without following the legal requirements for ownership of big cats is an offense punishable by up to seven years in jail, Elahi told the Reuters news agency.

As well as confiscating the 18 animals, the department raided 38 lion and tiger breeding farms and arrested eight people for violating the rules, he said.

There are more than 500 lions and tigers in homes and breeding farms in Punjab, Elahi said, adding they would be inspected by the end of the week.

Keeping exotic animals is considered a status symbol among some wealthy Pakistanis, despite the high fees associated with ownership.

Traffic plan announced for processions at Karachi’s Gulistan-e-Johar

The Traffic Police have announced a detailed traffic diversion plan ahead of the 12th Muharram procession on Tuesday, July 8, 2025 in Karachi.

The procession is scheduled to begin at 5:00 PM from Imambargah Sahib-e-Zaman in Block 14, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, and will conclude at Imambargah Akhir-ul-Zaman in Block 19.

It will pass through key areas including Rado Bakery, Johar Chowrangi, Perfume Chowk, and Johar Mor.

According to officials, all roads along the procession route and its connecting arteries will remain closed from 5:00 PM Tuesday until 4:30 AM Wednesday.

Both lanes of Kamran Chowrangi, leading to and from Johar Mor, will be closed for traffic. The Johar Underpass will also remain inaccessible during this time.

Traffic heading from Drigh Road and Dalmia toward Johar Chowrangi will be halted before the Nipa Flyover at the Chase Value U-turn and diverted through Ave Q Banquet, Overseas Flats, Naveed Bungalows, and Haroon Royal City.

Likewise, vehicles coming from Nipa to Drigh Road will be diverted via Alauddin U-turn to University Road.

Traffic from Mussamiyat via Kamran Chowrangi will be redirected towards Works Society using a U-turn at the Haskol Pump near Imambargah Wahdat-ul-Muslimeen. For travelers heading to Mussamiyat and Johar, alternate routes will be available via Pehlwan Goth and PHA Road.

Authorities have also warned of traffic congestion on Rashid Minhas Road, Dalmia Road, and areas near the Nipa and Johar flyovers. Heavy vehicles will not be allowed on affected routes during procession hours.

Citizens are urged to plan their travel in advance, use alternative routes, and cooperate with traffic personnel deployed for safety and guidance.

Samsung Galaxy S26 leak reveals potential camera upgrades

Samsung’s Galaxy S26 series isn’t slated for release until early next year, but that hasn’t stopped the steady drip of leaks revealing what’s on the horizon.

The latest scoop, as spotted by Android Authority, comes from reliable mobile tech leaker Ice Universe, who shared details on Weibo about upgrades coming to the S26 Ultra — specifically its camera hardware. For comparison, the current S25 Ultra features a 12MP ultra-wide sensor, a 200MP main shooter, and a 10MP telephoto lens. According to Ice, that formula is sticking around for the S26 Ultra — almost. The 3x telephoto lens will reportedly get a modest bump from 10MP to 12MP.

A small win for portrait enthusiasts. As for the rest of the hardware, the S26 Ultra is expected to keep its 5,000mAh battery. What is changing, however, is the form factor. Ice claims the new model will slim down to somewhere in the 7.xmm range, trimming down from the S25 Ultra’s 8.2mm profile.

It’s said that the S26 Ultra will end up lighter than the soon-to-be-announced iPhone 17 Pro Max.

  • Yuki Tsunoda admits he’s ‘lost’ after ‘outstandingly slow’ run to last place at Silverstone

Yuki Tsunoda admits he’s ‘lost’ after ‘outstandingly slow’ run to last place at Silverstone

Yuki Tsunoda cut a downbeat figure following the British Grand Prix, describing his pace as “outstandingly slow” in the wet/dry conditions en route to 15th position.

Tsunoda showed some much-needed promise during Qualifying at Silverstone, with the Japanese driver pushing for a Q3 spot until a power issue hampered his final run and left him just outside the cut.

Starting the race from 11th, Tsunoda was hopeful of being in points contention amid the changeable weather, only to struggle throughout and eventually cross the line as the final finisher – a lap down on winner Lando Norris.

Tsunoda’s afternoon included a clash with Haas rookie Ollie Bearman, which earned him a 10-second penalty and added insult to injury.

“I mean, it’s quite clear with that collision,” he said afterwards. “Other than that, to be honest the pace was sadly very slow.

“When it comes to the long run, it’s something that always is very outstandingly slow somehow. Just ‘degging’ [the tyres] like crazy – I never had like this kind of feeling.

“I know we were running quite low downforce, but to be honest I had still good confidence in the rain. The rain pace was absolutely nowhere, so I’m a bit lost.”

Asked what he can take from the weekend, given his apparent progress before the race, Tsunoda added: “Yeah, a couple of positives from the dry conditions. On one lap it was pretty good, but yeah, the long run is something to look at more.”

In the other Red Bull, Max Verstappen started from pole position and came away with a fifth-place finish, having lost ground with a spin when a mid-race Safety Car period ended.

  • George Russell laments British Grand Prix where ‘everything went wrong at every single point’

George Russell laments British Grand Prix where ‘everything went wrong at every single point’

George Russell was left to rue a British Grand Prix where “everything went wrong at every single point”, as Mercedes had a race to forget at Silverstone.

The Briton came home in 10th place on Sunday, having started fourth, as the Silver Arrows’ gambles failed to pay off in a Grand Prix that saw a mid-race rain shower, two Virtual Safety Car periods and two full Safety Cars.

The first crucial call that backfired occurred before the lights had even gone out – Russell one of five drivers to pit at the end of the Formation Lap for slick tyres. But thanks to a first lap crash involving Racing Bulls’ Liam Lawson, an immediate VSC period was called and that hampered Russell’s attempts to keep his hard tyres up to temperature.

The Briton did start to make some progress back through the field as the rain fell, his Mercedes looking well balanced in the wet conditions, but then came a second call to move back to the hard tyre again as the track dried.

With Fernando Alonso having pitted for slicks half a lap before, it became apparent that Alonso was struggling and soon Russell was also in a similar position.

Once again he could not get the C2 rubber up to temperature and spun off into the gravel – fortunately keeping clear of the barriers. In the end he did hold onto P10 at the flag, which was a small consolation from a very disappointing Grand Prix.

“Everything just went wrong at every single point to be honest,” Russell explained. “I feel at the beginning, pitting to slicks was not a stupid decision as we knew it was going to be dry for 25 minutes.

“But we had 15 minutes’ worth of [Virtual] Safety Car and that didn’t allow us to warm the tyres, it didn’t allow us to [utilise] the gains of when it was dry. By the end of that stint, we were five seconds a lap faster than the wet runners.

“Then at the end maybe I called to pit one or two laps early, but I wasn’t expecting the hard tyre and of course then it all just went wrong. Really disappointing day, if you play it safe, you’ll come home with a safe result and that’s not really what we were going for.”

Despite having a new set of mediums, Mercedes didn’t fit those or any of the softs onto Russell’s car – which Lance Stroll used to good effect in the early stages of the race. And, as Nico Hulkenberg showed with his run from P19 to third, there were big points available to anyone who made the right calls in a dramatic race.

“I think at the beginning with the information we had, it was totally justifiable but the call at the end was not right, that’s on me,” Russell concluded.

“If you have a fast car, you can afford to do what you want, and you’ll always find yourself in a good position. At the moment unfortunately we don’t have that luxury.”

While Russell did at least see the chequered flag, the same couldn’t be said for his team mate as Kimi Antonelli was rear-ended by the Racing Bulls car of Isack Hadjar when the visibility was at its worst midway through the race. Although Antonelli was able to limp back to the pits, the damage was too great and he retired the car.

“I mean the whole diffuser was gone so it was pretty undriveable the car, it was a shame,” the teenager said.

“I was just a passenger but I think Isack, he was also a passenger because he couldn’t see until he was into my back. So yeah, just a shame to have ended with another DNF.”

Google Store now prominently highlighting ‘Fi Wireless’

The Google Store in the US is now getting a prominent promotion for “Fi Wireless” alongside Pixel phones.

“Fi Wireless” appears between “Phones” and “Earbuds” in the Google Store top bar (on desktop) or hamburger menu (on mobile). The actual “Pixel and Google Fi Wireless make a great pair” page has been around for some time.

Get ultra-reliable 5G coverage and industry-leading security backed by Google, plus perks like full connectivity for your Pixel Watch and automatic encrypted calls between Pixel phones on the network.

End-to-end encryption for calling was introduced in 2021 for Android phones on Google Fi, with a lock icon appearing on the call screen. There’s also a “unique ringing tone before being connected.” Google explains how the “audio is encoded, and can only be decoded with a shared secret key,” and “each device has a private key and a public key, which aren’t saved.”

Google is promoting all four plans: Unlimited Premium, Unlimited Standard (introduced in April), Unlimited Essentials, and Flexible. The page also highlights the 7-day free trial and eSIM availability to “Switch instantly from home.”
