  • What Makes a Car Lovable? It’s Not the Tech, It’s the Cup Holders

What Makes a Car Lovable? It’s Not the Tech, It’s the Cup Holders

Nearly 100,000 car buyers of 2025 model-year autos were asked what they thought of their gleaming new rides. The results are revealing, to say the least. Want to know who was the worst performer? That ignominy goes to Audi, with an embarrassing 269 problems reported per 100 vehicles.

However, one of the most interesting discoveries of the J.D. Power Initial Quality Study (labelled as a “key finding”, no less) concerned not annoyance with the lack of physical buttons, nor, amazingly, intrusive bongs from speed-warning systems, but a marked increase in “cup-holder frustration”.

“While it seemed like manufacturers had cup holders figured out … manufacturers are struggling to keep up with being able to accommodate all the different shapes and sizes [of containers] that are increasingly available,” says the report.

So it seems that despite the auto industry’s obsession with software-defined vehicles, many purchasers would forego any number of digital doohickeys, so long as there was enough room in their new cars for multiple Big Gulps. Paying through the nose for a fancy new car stuffed with tech—ADAS, ambient lighting, back-groping seats, dog modes—doesn’t stop auto buyers from complaining about insufficiently expandable beverage bays.

For several years, this long-running annual benchmarking report has advised car brands to pay closer attention to the cup-holder kvetching. The cylindrical voids of space—or, in some cars, flip-out trays, door spaces, fancy holsters, or hinged pockets—are still too small, gripe many of those surveyed. Too small for what, though? Most likely gargantuan Stanley cups, giant Yeti Gallon Ramblers and similar such bladder-busters, the spilt contents of which could drench a desert into bloom.

Even though center console real estate in today’s cars is at a premium—especially now that ever-bigger touchscreens have become seemingly essential in every self-respecting digital cockpit—America’s (and increasingly the Middle East and Australia’s) big-drink culture dictates that automakers not scrimp on cup storage.

    It’s the Little Things

Twenty years ago, a PricewaterhouseCoopers report suggested that the number of cup holders in a US vehicle was one of the most critical factors in clinching the purchase decision for potential auto buyers. That it remains just as vital today must rankle with auto software engineers, but it doesn’t surprise Chris Fischer, Nissan’s go-to engineer for cup holders. “That cup holders work well is important to customer satisfaction,” Fischer tells WIRED. “It’s a key decider when buying a car.”

Working from Nissan’s North American technical center in Farmington Hills, Michigan, Fischer is the company’s senior manager of vehicle performance development, and, along with a team of “cabin utility” engineers, he has toiled to improve in-car beverage storage since 2015, when poor cup holder performance adversely impacted Nissan’s J.D. Power benchmarking scores.

Cup-holder design matters intensely to many consumers, he says. “If they’re mad about a touchpoint every day, it’ll sour their desire to want this vehicle again.”

“Touchpoints are critically important,” agrees Dick Powell, cofounder of London-headquartered design and innovation company Seymourpowell. “Great design is fundamentally about making things better, and when you go into a car showroom, the touchpoints are the first interactions you have with the car. How does the [door] handle feel? What’s it like opening the door? Where are the cup holders?”

Earth may have at least 6 ‘minimoons’ at any given time. Where do they come from?

Half a dozen fragments of the moon may briefly orbit Earth at any given time, before moving on to circle the sun, new research suggests — but the minimoons’ small size and quick pace make them challenging to spot.

When objects collide with the moon, they send up a shower of material, some of which manages to escape into space. Although there may be an occasional large chunk, most are fast-moving and smaller than 6.5 feet (2 meters) in diameter. The bulk of the lunar material falls into orbit around the more gravitationally attractive sun. But some of the debris may occasionally be pulled into an orbit around Earth before returning to circle the sun, researchers explained in a study published in the journal Icarus.

  • New Audeze Closed-Back Planar Magnetic LCD-S20 Headphones Now With SLAM Technology

New Audeze Closed-Back Planar Magnetic LCD-S20 Headphones Now With SLAM Technology

In the audio world, Audeze is known as the leading exponent of planar-magnetic headphones, an advanced driver technology that produces sound in a different way to the more usual dynamic drivers found in most headphones.

Unlike a dynamic driver, planar magnetic technology uses an ultra-thin membrane that is excited by a grid of magnets to produce a sound that’s dynamic and with a super-fast response that many people prefer because of its energy and dynamism. Planar magnetic has many of the advantages of regular dynamic drivers, but with the best aspects of electrostatic headphones, without the massive price premium.

Now Audeze has chalked up another first by launching the LCD-S20, its first pair of closed-back headphones using planar-magnetic drivers. By using its award-winning driver technology, Audeze has also used its patent-pending SLAM technology to increase the bass response and expand the spatial imaging of the headphones to create a sound that’s more like an open-back design but with the advantages of closed-back headphones.

    First Closed-Back Planar Magenetic

Why opt for closed-back headphones? Well, if you’re a recording engineer or a broadcaster, you can have the subtlety and energy of planar-magnetic drivers without the sound leaking out and disturbing others or being picked up by a microphone. It also means you get the advantages of planar-magnetic technology when out and about without being disturbed by external noise like traffic or other distractions.

At $499, the new LCD-S20 are Audeze’s most affordable LCD headphones, bringing the benefits of planar-magnetic technology to producers, musicians and audiophiles who need acoustic isolation.

The acronym SLAM stands for Symmetric Linear Acoustic Modulator. It’s a technology that Audeze introduced with its flagship CRBN2 electrostatic headphones in 2024. SLAM uses precisely tuned acoustic channels to selectively enhance low frequencies and enable more linear and accurate diaphragm movement.

    Wider Soundstage

For the first time, SLAM is available on a pair of planar-magnetic headphones and the result is a richer, more lifelike low end, which Audeze says brings more accurate detail for precise soundstage presentation compared to similar closed-back headphones. What this means in practice is these closed-back headphones sound more like the best pair of open-back headphones, thanks to a wider and airier soundstage as well as a frequency range of 10Hz to 40kHz.

“With the LCD-S20, we’re bringing Audeze’s renowned studio-quality sound to a broader audience without compromising on innovation or performance. The integration of our SLAM technology is a leap forward in both audio fidelity and user experience,” says Audeze’s CEO, Sankar Thiagasamudram.

“LCD-S20 is not just an entry point into the Audeze family; it’s a testament to our commitment to making world-class audio accessible to everyone, from budding musicians to seasoned audiophiles,” he adds.

    Magnetic Ear Pads

Audeze has designed the LCD-S20 for long-term user comfort and convenience. There are supple and supportive user-replaceable synthetic leather ear pads and a head strap that distributes the weight of the headphones.

The LCD-S20 are the first Audeze headphone to use a new magnetic earpad attachment mechanism that enables users to quickly and easily swap or replace their earpads. In addition, the LCD-S20 have a detachable single-sided cable that users can connect to either the left or right earcup to have the cable position that suits their taste.

Built around the proven Audeze chassis, which we first saw on the popular Audeze Maxwell gaming headset, the LCD-S20 also feature a spring-steel headband and forged aluminum yokes with high-strength and glass-infused nylon parts. The ear cups are wrapped in a woven cloth to give them a robust finish.

    Made In Southern California

The 90mm planar magnetic drivers used in the LCD-S20 are assembled in Audeze’s Southern California factory and include the company’s patented innovations, such as Fluxor magnets, Fazor waveguides, plus Uniforce voice coils, which help ensure accurate, ultra-low distortion sound.

Innovation is a word that’s often misused, but the LCD-S20 with their combination of Audeze planar-magnetic drivers and SLAM technology with a groundbreaking closed-back design makes these headphones genuinely innovative by bringing together the sophistication of planar-magnetic sound in a closed-back design that sounds like a premium open-back pair of headphones.

    Pricing and Availability:

Max Porter reflects on pre-season opener | Interview | News

Arsenal Under-21s coach Max Porter shared his pride in his young side after they opened their pre-season campaign with a 2-2 draw against National League outfit Boreham Wood.

Despite conceding inside the first minute, goals from Alex Marciniak and Maalik Hashi turned the game in Arsenal’s favour before the hosts equalised late on.

U21s report: Boreham Wood 2-2 Arsenal

    On the overall performance…

“I’m very, very proud. As everyone saw, we had an extremely young team out there, especially by the end of the game. Matches like these are a real test.

“Boreham Wood had a fantastic season last year after their promotion push, and I thought our lads stood up to the challenge really well. We lacked a bit of physicality compared to them, but we stuck to our principles and tried to play our way.

“It wasn’t the ideal type of game for us. We’d prefer to dominate possession more, but with such a mixed group, that was always going to be difficult. Overall though, I was really proud of the mentality, resilience, and togetherness they showed.”

    On pre-season preparations…

“Pre-season has been interesting. When we returned, we had the news about Mehmet leaving. He did an incredible job, and we all feel fortunate to have worked with him. Whoever steps into that role has big shoes to fill.

“But we’ve got a brilliant staff in the Under-21s, and with the leadership of Luke Hobbs and Per Mertesacker, things have remained seamless. There have been some changes, but the way the staff have handled it has allowed us to continue giving the players the best possible platform.

“It’s a credit to the team that we’ve had some of our players join the first-team group in La Manga for the first time. We’re hoping they’ve impressed Mikel and the staff. That’s always the aim. Meanwhile, we’re focused on continuing to develop the rest of the group here.”

    On academy players stepping up…

“We’re proud of all our boys, not just as players but as people. That’s a big part of what we do here. We aim to develop them holistically, because football careers can be short and unpredictable. Injuries, setbacks, so many things can happen.

“Making it at the top level, at Arsenal, fighting for the Premier League and Champions League, takes something special. There are no guarantees. But we can give them every tool possible to grow, both on and off the pitch.

“Last year, we had several players make their debuts in the cup competitions. That’s down to the trust and opportunities the first-team manager and staff gave them. Now, we have to keep pushing because we want to give them the best shot at long-term success.”

    On pre-season goals…

“The aim in pre-season is always the same. Avoid injuries and keep everyone available. As they say, the best ability is availability.

“On top of that, we want them to be as fit as possible to play our way. We want to press high, dominate possession, make angles, create movement, and you have to be incredibly fit to do that. Technically and tactically, we’re pushing them every day.

“Whether it’s going on loan for senior football or stepping up with the first team, each player’s path is different. But our goal is the same. We want to help them improve as much as possible so they’re ready to have their best season yet.”

Ncuti Gatwa reveals whether he’d return to Doctor Who

Now, during an appearance on Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, Gatwa has spoken out about his reasons for leaving the BBC’s sci-fi juggernaut.

“Why did you walk away from Doctor Who?” Kuenssberg asked him.

“Because I’m getting old and my body was tired,” the actor replied. “I’ve now just started doing some ballet, so I’m making some good decisions here.

“It’s the most amazing job in the world,” he continued. “It’s a job that any actor would dream of. And because it’s so good, it’s strenuous, it takes a lot out of you physically, emotionally, mentally.

“So, I – it was time,” he added.

Despite the toll – physical, mental and emotional – Gatwa hasn’t ruled out popping back into the world of Doctor Who again in the future.

When Kuenssberg pressed him on whether he could make another appearance in the vein of David Tennant’s return, he simply replied: “Never say never.”

It’s not the first time Gatwa has alluded to the pressures of playing the Doctor.

Speaking in a behind-the-scenes video on YouTube following his exit, he said: “It was always the plan to do this amount of seasons, because it’s a role that demands a lot of you, physically and emotionally and mentally.

“Actors playing the Doctor are only actors playing the Doctor, unfortunately, we are mere mortals. I would love to have the energy and the youth to be able to do this full time for the rest of my life but my knees are telling me it’s time.”
