Amazon asks corporate workers to ‘volunteer’ help with grocery deliveries as Prime Day frenzy approaches | Amazon

Corporate employees of Amazon were asked on Monday to volunteer their time to the company’s warehouses to assist with grocery delivery as it heads into its annual discount spree known as Prime Day.

In a Slack message reviewed by the Guardian that went to thousands of white-collar workers in the New York City area from engineers to marketers, an Amazon area manager called for corporate “volunteers to help us out with Prime Day to deliver to customers on our biggest days yet”. It is not clear how many took up the offer.

The ask came the day before Prime Day kicks off. The manager said volunteers are “needed” to work Tuesday through Friday this week, in two-hour shifts between 10am and 6pm in the Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn, where the company operates a warehouse as part of its grocery delivery service, Amazon Fresh. Corporate employees seconded to the warehouse would be tasked with picking items, preparing carts and bags of groceries for delivery, packing boxes on receiving carts, and working to “boost morale with distribution of snacks”, though they would be allowed to step into a conference room to take meetings and calls, according to the message. The manager noted such an effort would help “connect” warehouse and corporate teams.

Amazon routinely hires thousands of extra warehouse workers in advance of its annual Prime Day sale, which sees the massive online retailer discount thousands of goods, creating a surge in orders and demand for delivery. Amazon Fresh, available to Prime subscribers but separate from Amazon subsidiary Whole Foods, is also offering discounts this week during Prime Day, such as a free 90-day trial of the delivery services and $30 off of deliveries for current members, while maintaining its same-day or next-day delivery service. New York is one of Amazon’s busiest areas in the US.

An Amazon spokesperson, Griffin Buch, said this is not the first time “grocery corporate” employees have been “invited to volunteer” with fulfillment.

“This support is entirely optional, and it allows corporate employees to get closer to customers while enabling our store teams to focus on the work that’s most impactful,” Buch said.

Amazon Fresh has faced turbulence in recent years. Amid cost-cutting efforts in 2023 and a struggle to turn a profit on grocery delivery, CEO Andy Jassy closed several physical Amazon Fresh locations and laid off hundreds of employees in the segment. Amazon has laid off more than 27,000 employees overall since cost-cutting efforts began in 2022.

A week ago, Jassy spoke on CNBC of a future at Amazon where drones and even robots were used to fulfill and deliver goods to people.

“Over time, as we expand the use of robotics in our fulfillment centers, we will have robots doing fulfillment and transportation for us,” he said.

  • Josh Segarra Joins Fox’s Medical Comedy ‘Best Medicine’

Josh Segarra Joins Fox’s Medical Comedy ‘Best Medicine’

EXCLUSIVE: Josh Segarra (Abbott Elementary, Scream 6) has joined the cast of Fox‘s medical comedy Best Medicine, starring opposite Josh Charles and Abigail Spencer. The series, based on the popular British series Doc Martin, will go into production this summer in upstate New York.

Best Medicine is a one-hour comedy series that centers on Martin Best (Charles), a brilliant surgeon who abruptly leaves his illustrious career in Boston to become the general practitioner in a quaint East Coast fishing village where he spent summers as a child. Unfortunately, Martin’s blunt and borderline rude bedside manner rubs the quirky, needy locals the wrong way, especially local school teacher Louisa Glasson (Spencer); however, tenacity is the creed of everyone in their small village, and the people who live there may be exactly what the doctor ordered.

Although Martin can expertly address any medical ailment or mystery in this idiosyncratic town, he’s really just desperate to be left the hell alone. Instead, he keeps getting dragged right smack into the middle of their personal chaos, feuds and fantasies. What the locals don’t know is that Martin’s terse demeanor masks a debilitating new phobia and deep-seated psychological issues that prevent him from experiencing true intimacy with anyone. But tenacity is the creed of everyone in their small village, and the people who live there may be exactly what the doctor ordered.

In a series regular role, Segarra will play Sheriff Mark Mylow, the lovable, open-hearted lawman who may not be the sharpest tool in the shed but knows this town like the back of his hand. Heartbroken over the breakup of his long-term girlfriend, Louisa, he is excited to befriend Martin. But as Martin and Louisa grow closer, an awkward love triangle emerges.

Best Medicine is produced by Fox Entertainment Studios and executive-produced by Ben Silverman (The Office, U.S.), Rodney Ferrell (Stick), Howard T. Owens (Stick), Liz Tuccillo (Sex and the City), Mark Crowdy (Doc Martin) and Philippa Braithwaite (Doc Martin). The series is distributed worldwide by Fox Entertainment Global. All3Media International’s Doc Martin was produced in the UK by Buffalo Pictures in association with Homerun Film Productions, and brought to American audiences by Propagate Content.

Segarra can currently be seen starring in the new Netflix limited series Sirens, alongside Meghann Fahy, Julianne Moore, and Kevin Bacon.  Segarra plays Raymond, the proud manager of a restaurant franchise in Buffalo, New York, and the longtime, on-again, off-again toxic boyfriend of Devon (Fahy). He also stars in the award-winning ABC series Abbott Elementary. Appearing alongside Quinta Brunson, Segarra plays Manny, an employee of the school district. Additionally, he can be seen in Friendship, as in the feature film The Threesome, which premiered at the 2025 South by Southwest Film Festival and stars Zoey Deutch.

In 2023, Segarra joined the Scream franchise in the newest installment, Scream 6, starring opposite Courtney Cox, Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera. He also starred in the Apple TV+ comedy, The Big Door Prize, and Season 2 of the Starz series Heels as Brooks Rizzo. He also played scene-stealing Lance in the third season of HBO Max’s comedy series The Other Two. Prior, he joined the Marvel universe and starred in the hit series She-Hulk, alongside Tatiana Maslany, and starred alongside RuPaul in the Netflix scripted dramedy AJ and the Queen, created by RuPaul and Michael Patrick King. Additional credits include CW’s Arrow as Adrian Chase/Prometheus, Fox’s The Moodys opposite Denis Leary and Elizabeth Perkins. Segarra is repped by CAA, Andrew Tetenbaum at ATA, and Jackoway Tyerman.

  • Two dead in Houthi speedboat attack on cargo ship in Red Sea | Houthis

Two dead in Houthi speedboat attack on cargo ship in Red Sea | Houthis

Two seafarers on a bulk carrier have been killed in a drone and speedboat attack in the Red Sea blamed on Yemen’s Houthi rebels, the second incident in a day after months of calm.

The Red Sea, which passes Yemen’s coast, is a critical waterway for oil and commodities but traffic has dropped since the Iran-aligned Houthi militia began targeting ships in November 2023 in what they said was solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.

The deaths on the Liberian-flagged, Greek-operated Eternity C are the first involving shipping in the Red Sea since June last year and bring the number of killed in attacks on vessels there to six. The Houthis have not claimed responsibility for the incident but Yemen’s exiled government and the European Union said it was the group’s work.

Hours before the attack, the Houthis claimed they had sunk another Liberia-flagged, Greek-operated bulk carrier, the MV Magic Seas, off south-west Yemen on Sunday.

The crew were rescued by a passing merchant vessel and arrived safely in Djibouti on Monday, port authorities said.

“Just as Liberia was processing the shock and grief of the attack against Magic Seas, we received a report that Eternity C again has been attacked, attacked horribly and causing the death of two seafarers,” Liberia’s delegation told a London session of the United Nations shipping agency, the International Maritime Organization.

Since November 2023, the Houthis have disrupted commerce by launching hundreds of drones and missiles at vessels in the Red Sea, saying they were targeting ships linked to Israel.

The Houthis reached a ceasefire with the US in May but say they will keep attacking ships connected with Israel.

Arsenio Dominguez, the IMO’s secretary general, said on Tuesday. “After several months of calm, the resumption of deplorable attacks in the Red Sea constitutes a renewed violation of international law and freedom of navigation. Innocent seafarers and local populations are the main victims of these attacks and the pollution they cause.”

The Eternity C and Magic Seas were part of commercial fleets whose sister vessels have made calls to Israeli ports over the past year.

Ellie Shafik of Vanguard Tech, a UK-based maritime risk management company, said: “The pause in Houthi activity did not necessarily indicate a change in underlying intent. As long as the conflict in Gaza persists, vessels with affiliations, both perceived and actual, will continue to face elevated risks.”

At least two other crew members were injured on Eternity C and the vessel was listing, according to its operator, Cosmoship Management.

Eternity C and its crew – 21 Filipinos and one Russian – were attacked with sea drones and rocket-propelled grenades fired from speedboats, maritime security sources said.

Filipino seafarers, who form one of the world’s largest pools of merchant mariners, should exercise their right to refuse to sail in “high-risk, war-like” areas, their country’s department of migrant workers said on Tuesday.

Red Sea shipping has declined by about 50% from normal levels since the first Houthi attacks in 2023, according to Jakob Larsen of the shipping association, Bimco.

The security expert said: “This reduction in traffic has persisted due to the ongoing unpredictability of the security situation. As such, Bimco does not anticipate the recent attacks will significantly alter current shipping patterns.”

Monday’s attack on Eternity C, 50 nautical miles south-west of the Yemeni port of Hodeidah, was the second on merchant vessels in the region since November 2024, according to an official at the EU’s Operation Aspides, which helps protect Red Sea shipping.

The German foreign ministry summoned the Chinese ambassador in Berlin on Tuesday after a Chinese warship used a laser to target a German aircraft taking part in Aspides.

All Blacks skipper Scott Barrett sidelined by calf injury

All Blacks skipper Scott Barrett has been ruled out of the remainder of his side’s series with France due to a calf injury.

The All Blacks confirmed the new on Tuesday morning, but offered no details as to how long Barrett may be sidelined.

They also did not advise of any replacements, though Blues skipper Patrick Tuipulotu is among the options to replace Barrett in Wellington this weekend, while Tupou Vaa’i could also shift from the No. 6 jersey he filled in Dunedin.

The New Zealand captain was substituted in the 58th minute of their thrilling 31-28 win in Dunedin, where the All Blacks were forced to battle right to the final siren to overcome what is an understrength France squad.

But the inexperienced Les Bleus side performed well above local expectations in a match that was marred by constant TMO interjection.

Barrett is likely to be replaced as skipper by star back-rower Ardie Savea, one of the team’s two vice-captains alongside Barrett’s younger brother, Jordie.

While he will play no further part against France, Barrett will be targeting a return either for the All Blacks’ opening Rugby Championship clashes with Argentina or in the hugely anticipated back-to-back Tests with the world champion Springboks.

  • Texas flood toll tops 100 as rescuers race to find the missing

Texas flood toll tops 100 as rescuers race to find the missing

A man searches the area, following flash flooding, in Hunt, Texas, on July 6, 2025. — Reuters

The death toll from catastrophic flooding in Texas surged past 100 on Monday, as rescue teams waded through wreckage and rising waters in a desperate search for those still missing after days of relentless downpours.

Among the dead were at least 27 girls and counsellors who were staying at a youth summer camp on a river when disaster struck over the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

Forecasters have warned of more flooding as rain falls on saturated ground, complicating recovery efforts involving helicopters, boats and dogs, as the number of victims is expected to rise still.

President Donald Trump is planning to visit Texas on Friday, the White House said, as it slammed critics claiming his cuts to weather agencies had weakened warning systems.

“Blaming President Trump for these floods is a depraved lie, and it serves no purpose during this time of national mourning,” Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters Monday.

She said the National Weather Service, which The New York Times reported had several key roles in Texas unfilled before the floods, issued “timely and precise forecasts and warnings.”

Trump has described the floods that struck in the early hours of Friday as a “100-year catastrophe” that “nobody expected.”

The president, who previously said disaster relief should be handled at the state level, has signed a major disaster declaration, activating fresh federal funds and freeing up resources.

    Tragedy

Kerr County in central Texas has been hardest hit of the counties devastated by the floods, with 56 adults and 28 children killed, according to the local sheriff´s office.

They include the 27 who had been staying at Camp Mystic, an all-girls Christian camp that was housing about 750 people when the floodwaters struck.

Camps are a beloved tradition in the long US summer holidays, with children often staying in woods, parks and other rural areas.

Texas Senator Ted Cruz described them as a chance to make “lifetime friends — and then suddenly it turns to tragedy.”

In a terrifying display of nature’s power, the rain-swollen waters of the Guadalupe River reached treetops and the roofs of cabins as girls at the camp slept.

Blankets, teddy bears and other belongings were caked in mud. Windows in the cabins were shattered, apparently by the force of the water.

Volunteers were helping search through debris from the river, with some motivated by personal connections to the victims.

“We’re helping the parents of two of the missing children,” Louis Deppe, 62, told AFP. “The last message they got was ‘We’re being washed away,’ and the phone went dead.”

Months’ worth of rain fell in a matter of hours on Thursday night into Friday, and rain has continued in bouts since then.

The Guadalupe surged around 26 feet (eight meters) — more than a two-story building — in just 45 minutes.

Flash floods, which occur when the ground is unable to absorb torrential rainfall, are not unusual in this region of south and central Texas, known colloquially as “Flash Flood Alley.”

Human-driven climate change has made extreme weather events such as floods, droughts and heat waves more frequent and more intense in recent years.

  • Lonzo Ball excited for fresh start with Cavaliers after trade from Bulls

Lonzo Ball excited for fresh start with Cavaliers after trade from Bulls

Lonzo Ball has produced when healthy but that has rarely been the case during his 8-year career.

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio (AP) — Lonzo Ball doesn’t have to worry about rehabbing from a knee injury for the first time in a couple seasons.

Instead, the veteran guard will use the offseason getting acclimated to a new team.

Ball was at the Cleveland Cavaliers’ practice complex meeting with the medical staff and coaches on Monday after his trade from the Chicago Bulls for forward Isaac Okoro was finalized on Sunday.

Chicago and Cleveland agreed to the trade on June 28, but it didn’t become official until the start of the new league year on Sunday.

“I think it’s a great situation for my play style,” Ball said. “Don (Donovan Mitchell) is one of the best players we have in the league. And they have two bigs that are mobile, can set pick-and-rolls and get to the rim like that.

“And then do some switching on defense. I think we can do a lot of different things on both sides of the ball, and to have the option to be able to do those things is great.”

Ball averaged 7.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.3 assists in 35 games this past season after missing the 2022-23 and 2023-24 campaigns because of a left knee injury. The 27-year old Ball underwent a meniscus and cartilage transplant in his left knee in March 2023 after two surgeries failed to fix an injury he suffered during his first season in Chicago in 2021-22.

He missed the last two months of the season due to a sprained right wrist, but was encouraged with the way his knee held up throughout the season.

“After the games I didn’t really know what to expect,” Ball said. “But, you know, when I first got back versus Minnesota in that preseason game, I was kind of surprised that I was moving around.

“I feel like I just got better as the year went on. Unfortunately, I had to deal with my wrist, but as far as my knee was concerned, it was pretty good.”

Ball, the second overall pick by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2017 draft, has one year remaining on his contract with a team option for the 2026-27 season.

Cleveland had a need at point guard after Ty Jerome signed with the Memphis Grizzlies. Starter Darius Garland is likely to miss the start of the regular season after undergoing surgery on his left big toe last month.

The Cavaliers had the second-best record in the NBA at 64-18 but were eliminated in the Eastern Conference semifinals by the Indiana Pacers in five games.

Ball has yet to take part in a playoff game in the six seasons he has played, which is something he is hoping will change.

“When you start in September or October you can’t look too far ahead. But they were No. 1 in the East last year, so everybody knows that. It’s pretty much ring or nothing,” he said. “It’s just making sure I’m prepared to be as available as possible and put myself in the best position to finish the season strong.

“Right now, it’s more so just being in the weight room making sure my lower body is good and stuff like that.”
