Scientists Discover One Of The Heaviest Binary Star System 25,000 Light-Years Away

Astronomers have made an exciting discovery about one of the heaviest pairs of stars designated as NGC 3603-A1. Led by Dr. Phil Massey of Lowell Observatory, a team of researchers used data from the Hubble Telescope and new observations to study this massive binary star system in unprecedented detail. Their findings, set to be published in The Astrophysical Journal, shed light on how some of the universe’s biggest stars live, evolve, and die.

Located 25,000 light-years away in a vibrant star-forming region called NGC 3603, the NGC 3603-A1 system consists of two enormous stars locked in a rapid orbit.

These stellar giants circle each other about every four days, meaning that in the time it takes Earth to orbit the Sun once, these stars complete nearly 100 orbits around each other. One star is about 93 times the mass of our Sun, while the other is roughly 70 times as massive, making them among the heaviest binary stars ever directly measured in the Milky Way.

What makes these stars stand out is not just their size but their intense brightness and power. They release strong winds and radiation, giving them the appearance of Wolf-Rayet stars, which are typically older stars nearing the end of their lives. However, the stars in NGC 3603-A1 are surprisingly young, showing how extreme conditions can make massive stars seem more evolved than they are.

The discovery was a team effort that began with a key insight from Sarah Bodansky, who was an undergraduate student at Carleton College during the summer of 2020. While working remotely at Lowell Observatory, she noticed something in older Hubble data that others had missed: the stars’ spectral features doubled when they moved toward and away from Earth, revealing their binary nature.

By carefully studying both new and archived Hubble data, the team measured the stars’ sizes, temperatures, and interactions. They found that the smaller star appears to have taken mass from its larger companion, causing it to spin faster. This mass transfer is a crucial clue to how massive stars change over time and what happens when they eventually die, often in dramatic supernova explosions or by collapsing into black holes.

The NGC 3603-A1 system is also significant because massive binary stars like these are thought to be the ancestors of binary black holes. When these stars die, they can form pairs of black holes that eventually merge, creating gravitational waves — ripples in space-time first detected in 2015. By studying systems like NGC 3603-A1, scientists gain insights into these cosmic events.

Poland Construction Industry Report 2025 | Output to Grow by 2.4% this Year, Driven by Flood Recovery, Tourism, and Energy & Infrastructure Investments

    Company Logo

Poland’s construction industry is poised for growth due to significant investments in flood-affected areas, tourism, and energy infrastructure. Key opportunities lie in renewable energy projects and infrastructure development, while risks include economic challenges like inflation and trade deficits.

Dublin, Sept. 01, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The “Poland Construction Market Size, Trends, and Forecasts by Sector – Commercial, Industrial, Infrastructure, Energy and Utilities, Institutional and Residential Market Analysis to 2029 (Q2 2025)” report has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com’s offering.

The analyst expects the Polish construction industry to grow by 2.4% in 2025, supported by investments in developing flood-affected areas, and a rise in tourism activities, coupled with a robust investment in the energy and infrastructure sector.

In April 2025, the Council of Europe Development Bank (CEB) approved a loan of PLN881.2 million ($217.9 million) to support the country in rebuilding the flood-affected areas, which were destroyed during the late September 2024 floods. Moreover, in March 2025, the European Commission (EC) announced that its plan to provide a loan of PLN105.8 billion ($26.2 billion) to Poland for constructing 800km of fort walls, which is anticipated to be completed by 2028.

However, higher budget deficit, recent US tariff impositions, rising trade deficit, mounting debt, falling residential permits, higher inflation, and lower construction activities are expected to pose a downside risk for the construction industry over the short to medium term. According to the Statistics Poland (GUS), the total number of residential building permits issued fell by 11.6% YoY in Q1 2025, while the total number of residential buildings on which construction started fell by 7.3% YoY in Q1 2025. According to the Central Bank of Poland, inflation stood at 4.3% in April 2025, which is above the Bank’s target of reaching 2.5% by 2026.

The construction industry is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 4% from 2026 to 2029, supported by government investments in transportation and energy infrastructure in line with the government aims to increase the share of renewables in electricity production, with targets of 56% by 2030, up from 16.5% in 2023.

The government also aims to reach the total installed capacity in renewable energy in electricity generation to 25GW by 2030. Of this, 5.9GW of offshore wind energy, 9GW of nuclear energy, 9.1GW of solar and hydrogen energy will be installed by 2030

  • Davina Perrin tipped to star for England at T20 World Cup next summer

Davina Perrin tipped to star for England at T20 World Cup next summer

Northern Superchargers’ teenage sensation Davina Perrin has been tipped to star for England in next summer’s home T20 World Cup after a breakthrough tournament in The Hundred.

Perrin smashed a scintillating 42-ball century in Saturday’s Eliminator against London Spirit to send Superchargers through to the final with Southern Brave on Sunday – where they won by seven wickets with 12 balls to spare.

The 18-year-old was out cheaply against Brave for 17, but still produced an eye-catching uppercut off Lauren Bell and played a key role in Superchargers’ maiden title with 260 runs in the 100-ball competition with an average of 28.88 at a strike rate of 136.84.

Wolverhampton-born Perrin, who is a graduate of Ebony Rainford-Brent’s ACE (African Caribbean Engagement) programme, was not included in Charlotte Edwards’ England squad for this month’s 50-over World Cup despite a maiden professional hundred in July for Warwickshire.

However, Superchargers team-mate and former Australia international Nicola Carey does not expect it will be long before Perrin – who also blitzed an unbeaten 72 against Trent Rockets – makes her debut for England.

Carey said: “Yeah, she is incredible. Again, is she 18? She’s 18-years-old, so to be able to peel off a hundred in a 100-ball competition, I think only one person has done that – Tammy Beaumont – so, now Davs is the second person to.

“It was a ridiculous innings to be honest, a ridiculous game but obviously set up by Dav.

“She has got so much talent and I’m sure we will see her in maybe some England colours in the not-too-distant future.”

Asked if her old Australia team-mates will be happy Perrin is not involved in the upcoming World Cup, the Superchargers match-winner skipped ahead to next summer’s major T20 event in England – where the final will be held at Lord’s.

“I’m sure they will be pleased, I don’t think it will impact me too much,” Tasmanian all-rounder Carey laughed.

“Yeah, I mean who knows. You guys are hosting a T20 World Cup next year aren’t you?

“Who knows, we might see Davs (name) up in lights here at the World Cup final for you guys.”

  • Yrsa Daley-Ward Novel ‘The Catch’ Optioned For TV Remake

Yrsa Daley-Ward Novel ‘The Catch’ Optioned For TV Remake

EXCLUSIVE: Blue Therapy maker Osun Group has optioned its first book in the shape of Yrsa Daley-Ward‘s fiction novel The Catch.

This will see Daley-Wood making her TV screenwriting debut by adapting the book, which is billed as a “supernatural thriller exploring sisterhood, identity, and the radical act of choosing yourself.”

Early stage work has begun on an adaptation for a returning series, marking Osun’s first book-to-screen acquisition and a first scripted project unveiled from a slate of projects. Osun’s Head of Drama, Sheila Nortley, who first worked with Daley-Wood on the 2011 indie feature David is Dying, struck the option agreement.

Daley-Ward, Supacell exec Nortley and Osun founder Luti Fagbenle are executive producers, with the process of finding a showrunner, director and on-screen talent underway.

The Catch, published in July, follows estranged twin sisters Clara and Dempsey, whose lives are upended when Clara, a celebrity author craving validation, spots a woman in London who looks exactly like their long-vanished mother – unchanged by time and unburdened by motherhood. She is convinced this is their mother returned, while the reclusive Dempsey suspects a con. The sisters collide over the stranger’s identity, and are propelled toward a reckoning that threatens their very existence and forces them to confront the wounds of their past.

The book was selected for the New York Times Book Review Book Club and included on summer read lists by the likes of The Washington Post, TIME, USA Today and Forbes.

The Catch asks, ‘What if the person you fear most and the person you long for most were the same?” said Daley-Ward. “I’ve often wondered what it would be like to meet my mother again, not as she was, but as I am. The TV adaptation takes that unsettling question and spins it into an edgy, psychological suspense about family, obsession, and the terror of recognition.”

Nortley called the book “both vast and otherworldly, yet so deeply intimate and tragically human,” adding, “Yrsa’s storytelling has a way of getting under the skin and holding a mirror up to our most uncomfortable truths. To have such a bold and inventive novel as our first scripted adaptation at Osun Group is both an honour and a statement of intent. I can’t wait to bring it to the screen.”

Daley-Ward, who splits her time between L.A. and London, began her career as a poet, curating deeply personal prose through her Instagram feed. The Catch is her debut fiction novel following her poetry collection The Terrible. She also collaborated with Beyonce, co-writing Black is King, the visual album inspired by Disney+’s The Lion King. She has also acted in shows such as Outer Range, World on Fire and Kwame Kwei-Armah’s upcoming feature directorial debut The Collaboration.

London-based Osun is best known for Blue Therapy, the British unscripted relationships YouTube format that we told you earlier this month had landed its first international version, via Streamz in Belgium.

Daley-Ward is represented by Marya Spence at Janklow & Nesbit Associates, Gary Burkhard at Alan Siegel, the Artists Partnership, Michelle Kroes at CAA and Bloch Law.

  • ‘Waking Hours’ Film Teaser Venice: Afghan People Smugglers Doc

‘Waking Hours’ Film Teaser Venice: Afghan People Smugglers Doc

Waking Hours is the debut feature documentary by Federico Cammarata and Filippo Foscarini, which will celebrate its world premiere on Thursday, Sept. 4, in the competition section of the Venice Critics’ Week (Settimana Internazionale della Critica), an independent event taking place during the Venice Film Festival.

The movie from Rome-based production company Volos Films Italia, in co-production with Roberto Minervini’s Cosma Film and in collaboration with RAI Cinema, takes us on a nocturnal journey with a clan of Afghan people smugglers at the edge of the European Union, enabling illegal border crossings between Serbia and EU member Hungary.

They are “awaiting those to be carried across the border, wandering through the labyrinth of a sleepless, perpetual night,” notes a synopsis. “At the edge of the forest, shadowy human figures gather around the fire, while the distant echo of gunshots reverberates through the night. Not far away, a wall of sharp metal marks the beginning of Europe.”

The filmmakers provide some insight into the genesis of the doc. “Waking Hours emerges from the depths of the forest, not as a backdrop but as a living body — a place of disorientation, transformation, and fragile refuge,” explain Cammarata and Foscarini. “Along the Balkan route, cinema vérité and theater merge in a poetic counter-investigation that reveals without fully showing, creating space for listening. The forest is our boat; cinema, our passage.”

Says Stefano Centini of Volos Films Italia: “We first met the project at Bellaria Film Festival, where the directors pitched it during [an] (In)Emergenza [section session]. It became clear that Waking Hours offers not only a unique look into a world we rarely see from an insider perspective, but also a daring work from two upcoming directors who chose to confront this topic with the necessary formal research and visual approach.”

He concludes: “They are digging out a personal perspective which encompasses the mere ‘function’ of the characters and highlights something more universal about the human condition. We are excited to present this bold film.”

THR can debut the very first teaser for Waking Hours before its world debut in the Venice Critics’ Week program that runs through Sept. 6, as part of the 82nd Venice International Film Festival. “How did it feel to cross the border?” is a question teased in the clip that features darkness and fire.

“I know it’s often said, but this film truly is unique — not only in the content it is showing, but in how it is shown,” says Tommaso Priante of Luminalia. “Waking Hours offers a perspective on migration that hasn’t been seen before. Having worked for a year in a refugee center in Italy, I drew on that experience in creating Luminalia. Bringing films like Waking Hours to audiences means confronting stereotypes and encouraging us to reflect on, and even question, the notions of ‘us’ and ‘them’.’

10 buildings sealed, 9 arrested in dengue prevention drive

ISLAMABAD, Sep 1 (APP):The district administration of Islamabad has launched a strict operation against violations of dengue prevention rules and sealed 10 buildings while arrested nine individuals in the Nilore area of the Federal Capital for allowing mosquitoes

larvae to breed on their premises.

According to the spokesman of Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) here, this action coincided with a high-level meeting to review the city’s strategy against the disease.

He said that the district administration was intensifying its campaign against dengue fever. Authorities were taking direct action against property owners and residents who breach standard operating procedures designed to prevent the spread of the virus.

In a specific operation in the Nilore area, the Assistant Commissioner took decisive measures. After inspections revealed mosquito larvae breeding on the premises, officials moved to seal ten buildings. This legal action prevents access to the properties until the owners comply with health regulations. Additionally, nine people were arrested in connection with These violations signal a zero-tolerance approach.

Meanwhile, in this regard, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Islamabad Irfan Nawaz Memon chaired a meeting to review the anti-dengue campaign.

The meeting included all Assistant Commissioners, Magistrates, and relevant officials. Its primary purpose was to assess the progress of the ongoing fight against dengue. The discussion focused on the effectiveness of current actions and planning for future steps.

A central directive from the meeting was the urgent need to identify and eliminate mosquito breeding grounds. Officials were instructed to ramp up inspection efforts. The goal is to find stagnant water sources where dengue-carrying mosquitoes can lay eggs. These locations include uncovered water tanks, empty plant pots, discarded tires, and any

other containers that can hold water.

Deputy Commissioner Memon is taking a hands-on approach to management. He conducted a performance review of

each officer involved in the campaign. This individual assessment is intended to ensure accountability and maximize efficiency across all teams.

To maintain momentum and transparency, the Deputy Commissioner issued new orders for reporting. All relevant officers must now submit daily reports on their anti-dengue activities.

Furthermore, the administration is focusing on data accuracy. Deputy Commissioner Memon instructed his team to ensure the collection of real-time statistics on dengue cases. Accurate and up-to-date information is critical for tracking the outbreak’s spread. It helps officials deploy resources to the most affected areas and measure the success of their interventions.

The strategy combined enforcement with public responsibility. While the administration is seizing properties and making arrests, it also underscores the role of citizens. Preventing dengue requires collective effort. Residents are urged to

check their homes and workplaces for standing water. Simple steps, like covering water containers and properly

disposing of trash, can disrupt the mosquito’s breeding cycle.

The district administration’s two-pronged approach of strict enforcement and daily monitoring represents a significant escalation in the fight against dengue. The sealing of buildings and arrests sends a strong message about the seriousness of the situation. The daily reviews and data collection aim to create a responsive and agile system to protect public health in Islamabad. The success of this campaign depends on both consistent official action and community cooperation.
