  • Bitcoin funds may soon be bigger than gold, even as yellow metal sets another round of records

Bitcoin funds may soon be bigger than gold, even as yellow metal sets another round of records

    By Myra P. Saefong

Assets under management for bitcoin ETFs have been quickly catching up to those for gold ETFs

Gold futures settled Tuesday at a record high, while bitcoin rose to a record highs in mid-August.

Gold has climbed to fresh record highs, but bitcoin has proved to be a worthy rival, as assets under management in exchange-traded funds for the cryptocurrency have been quickly catching up to those of the safe-haven staple.

Investor appetite has been strong for both, although central-bank buying of the precious metal has contributed to its significant outperformance versus bitcoin so far this year.

Still, the ETF structure for bitcoin has “legitimized it for many investors,” said Louis LaValle, co-founder and chief executive officer at Frontier Investments, adding that the recent run-up for the cryptocurrency reflects both “broadening acceptance and speculative positioning.”

In the few years that bitcoin ETFs have been around, assets under management for major bitcoin exchange-traded funds have seen a sharp climb, rivaling that of AUM in gold ETFs, according to a chart from Bespoke Investment Group posted on X late last week.

The first bitcoin futures ETF, the ProShares Bitcoin ETF BITO, was launched in 2021, while spot bitcoin ETFs, which directly hold the cryptocurrency, were approved in January 2024. Those include Bitwise Bitcoin BITB and the iShares Bitcoin Trust IBIT ETFs.

AUM for eight gold ETFs, including the largest – SPDR Gold Shares GLD – have climbed to nearly $180 billion, and AUM for eight bitcoin ETFs, including iShares Bitcoin Trust, recently touched a high near $160 billion, based on a Dow Jones analysis of FactSet data. That’s impressive considering the short time bitcoin ETFs have been in existence.

This chart tracks assets under management in billions of dollars for eight bitcoin ETFs and eight gold ETFs. The sharp rise in bitcoin ETFs’ AUM in early 2024 coincides with approval of spot bitcoin ETFs by the Securities and Exchange Commission.

“Bitcoin has captured some of gold’s market share, particularly among younger investors and those with higher risk tolerance,” LaValle told MarketWatch.

Bitcoins, however, “aren’t perfect substitutes,” he said, pointing out that central banks bought more than 1,000 metric tons of gold last year and “zero bitcoin.”

Those central-bank purchases of gold last year were at nearly triple the historical average, while at the same time, central banks reduced their holdings in U.S. Treasurys, he said.

    “That distinction matters,” LaValle said.

“Gold has proven a track record through multiple financial crises dating back centuries,” he said. “Bitcoin’s track record is 15 years, and most of that in a liquidity-driven bull market.”

Still, the “positive, simultaneous price movement between bitcoin and gold likely means they’re both trading on the same thesis now – current debasement concerns,” said LaValle.

    Bitcoin’s rise

It’s tough to ignore just how quickly interest in bitcoin has grown.

“Bitcoin has had U.S. regulatory tailwinds that have helped prices increase this year, and adoption is growing,” said Aakash Doshi, global head of strategy at State Street Investment Management. Earlier this year, for example, U.S. President Donald Trump established a strategic bitcoin reserve.

Both gold and bitcoin can benefit from a weak U.S. dollar and alternative fiat demand, but gold is a “low-volatility reserve asset,” so if the U.S. is headed into stagflation or a real growth slowdown, then gold is a safe haven, Doshi told MarketWatch.

Gold futures (GC00) (GCZ25) on Tuesday settled at a record high of $3,592.20 an ounce on Comex, up 36% for the year so far. Bitcoin, meanwhile, last closed at a record high of $124,495.51 on Aug. 14, according to a Dow Jones Market Data analysis of CoinDesk data. At $110,670 in Tuesday trading, it was up 18.5% year to date.

Bitcoin’s fundamentals are solid, with “adoption and scarcity driving long-term growth,” said Max Baecker, president of American Hartford Gold. “Recent rallies past $110,000 highlight investor appetite amid Fed and macro catalysts, though volatility remains high.”

Bitcoin can outperform gold in the short term, especially during “speculative rallies or moments of strong digital adoption,” he said, but its extreme volatility means those gains can “reverse quickly.”

    Far from a ‘gold rush’

Meanwhile, inflows of new money into gold have been strong, though well below the surges of the 2008 financial crisis or the COVID-19 pandemic, said Adrian Ash, director of research at BullionVault.

Given that, “gold’s relentless bull market remains far from a gold rush,” he said. Inflows of new money are “being matched by existing investors choosing to sell at gold’s new record highs.”

Gold demand overall in August, net of selling, was practically zero by weight, and in total, the number of private investors buying gold across the month slipped 5.3% to the fewest since January, while the number of sellers dropped only 3.5% to the fewest since June, he said.

That lowered BullionVault’s Gold Investor Index – which offers insight into investor sentiment in physical bullion – by 0.3 point to 53.9, the lowest reading in seven months, according to Ash, though any reading above 50.0 signals more buyers than sellers.

New U.S. investing in gold, meanwhile, was “muted again,” Ash said, falling by 14.3% from July and dropping 27.4% from its 12-month average.

In recent commentary, Ross Norman, chief executive officer at Metals Daily, said that what makes gold’s bull run “most extraordinary” is that it has seen low participation, as far as Western investors have been concerned, at the institutional and retail levels.

It’s a sort of “stealth rally,” he said. Seen from afar, “Asians clearly have a very different perspective and their conviction is certainly much higher.”

BullionVault’s Ash said the lack of U.S. investor interest in gold is “ironic given that Trump is playing such a key role in driving up prices.” While Trump’s domestic, foreign and trade policies are clearly supporting further inflows to gold from central banks and Asian wealth, “they’re only part of a deeper, long-term fracturing of the global geopolitical system,” he said.

“The resulting mistrust and uncertainty look set to continue supporting and driving gold prices higher,” Ash said.

    Bitcoin vs. gold debate

When it comes to whether bitcoin or gold is a better choice for investors, Juan Leon, research analyst at crypto index fund manager Bitwise, said that would depend on their “mandate and risk tolerance.”

As to which is the better choice for investors – bitcoin or gold – the ‘answer is not either/or, but probably both.’Juan Leon, Bitwise

Gold offers stability and proven crisis hedging, he said, while “bitcoin offers asymmetric upside, a faster adoption curve and macro risk-hedging potential.”

So for most investors, the answer to which is the better choice is “not either/or, but probably both,” said Leon.

What’s driving both right now is the same macroeconomic theme: “declining confidence in sovereign debt,” said Frontier Investments’ LaValle, and central banks buying gold at these levels demonstrates that they’re more worried about currency debasement than price. “That same dynamic supports bitcoin, but through retail and hedge-fund flows rather than sector rotation.”

He continued: “As long as that theme persists, both can work, but for a more conservative investor, gold’s institutional backing and longer track record make it the more reliable hedge. Bitcoin’s the higher beta play on the same thesis.”

The Argentina vs Venezuela football match is scheduled to start at 5:00 AM IST (Indian Standard Time).

The Argentina football team will be led by Lionel Messi for the match. They are on top of the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers – CONMEBOL standings with 35 points (11 wins, 2 draw and three losses) and are already assured qualification.

“I don’t know if there will be friendlies or more matches (at home), but it is a very special match, so my family will be there with me: my wife, my children, my parents, my siblings,” Messi said on the prospect of playing his last international match in Argentina. “We’re going to live it like that. I don’t know what will happen next.”

The top six from the 10-team group, competing in a home and away round-robin league format, qualify directly for the FIFA World Cup 2026 in the USA, Canada and Mexico. The seventh team will make the Inter-confederation play-offs.

  • What ‘My Life With the Walter Boys’ Finale Means for Season 3: Interview

What ‘My Life With the Walter Boys’ Finale Means for Season 3: Interview

[This story contains spoilers from the season two finale of Netflix’s My Life with the Walter Boys.]

Netflix’s My Life with the Walter Boys is ready to come to grips with the past and embrace the present — but not without some drama along the way.

Last season, Nikki Rodriguez’s Jackie Howard moved to Silver Falls in rural Colorado after being taken in by the Walters, a family of seven sons and one daughter, after tragically losing her family in an accident in New York. Left to find her place, Jackie found herself developing feelings for Alex Walter (Ashby Gentry), a kind bookish nerd, and Cole Walter (Noah LaLonde), the former quarterback at Silver Falls High School who suffered a career-ending injury.

After spending that first season juggling feelings for both brothers, the finale saw Jackie and Cole kissing for the first time despite Jackie already dating Alex, who had also confessed to loving her. Jackie returned to New York to escape but season two, which began streaming Aug. 28, saw Jackie returning to Silver Falls and to the Walter family determined to make things right.

But now she has another dilemma, says showrunner Melanie Halsall.

The second season of the Netflix hit ended on a cliffhanger with Jackie finally confessing her feelings to Cole, but Alex hearing the confession. “Jackie’s dilemma is that she genuinely loves both brothers,” Halsall told The Hollywood Reporter over email while in production on season three. With Alex, Jackie has a “safe space,” but with Cole there’s an attraction given their understanding of each other after both facing “huge upheavals and losses that have changed the course of their lives.”

As for where the love triangle goes from here, Halsall teased that heartbreak is bound to happen. “At the heart of our show is a love triangle and I don’t know if those can ever really be truly resolved, as someone is always going to get their heart broken,” Halsall added. Below, the showrunner chats from the set of My Life with the Walter Boys season three about Alex’s “glow up,” why Jackie and Alex rekindled, and Jackie’s dilemma with Alex and Cole going forward.

    ***

Jackie may have returned to Silver Falls but she is now more than ever trying to figure out who she is and her place within the family, Alex/Cole and school. What did you hope to explore as she returns to Silver Falls?

This season, Jackie is struggling with her identity. She has decided to cement her place in the world of Silver Falls and the Walter Family, but still maintain who she is as a Howard. In season one, she was trying to avoid and jump over this difficult phase in her life by focusing on her future: getting out of Silver Falls and into Princeton as a way to outrun her grief. But her time in NYC and conversations with Katherine have made her realize that this is where she needs to be, so her goal is to be a part of this family and community. We explore what that means in terms of coming to grips with her past and embracing her present.

We also see Jackie and Cole try to confront and heal from their past tragedies, with Jackie still grieving her family and Cole his football career. Can you talk about the parallels of their stories where they’re both trying to let go of their pasts to sort out their futures?

Part of the attraction between the two of them is that they understand each other because they have both had huge upheavals and losses that have changed the course of their lives — and they are uniquely positioned to help each other come to terms with what has happened to them and how they will move forward.

Then with Alex, this season he’s told that he has changed. What did you want to explore with this Alex 2.0 we see in season two?

Alex has had a “glow up.” He went to rodeo school and came back both physically and emotionally changed, and more mature. Yes, he’s hiding his hurt, and at first this manifests by him seeming to have also become a different person. But of course he hasn’t; inside, he is still the same sweet and sensitive Alex we know and love. I wanted to explore what it was like to be a teenager who has changed physically and is trying on a different personality, but who is still the same person inside and who eventually realizes who they really are.

We also see Alex and Kiley (Mya Lowe) seemingly not as close as they once were, and Alex still seems to be oblivious to her feelings towards him. Do you see Alex ever seeing Kiley as anything more than friends like she once did? Or do you ever see him exploring a connection with his rodeo mentor Blake (Natalie Sharp)?

Alex and Kiley have been friends forever and Kiley has been in love with Alex for almost as long as that. I think Alex has some growing up to do before he will be able to see that. As for Blake, they have great chemistry and they share a love of horses, so who knows what might happen there?

This season also followed the ups and downs of the relationships between Nathan (Corey Fogelmanis) and Skylar (Jaylan Evans), Danny (Connor Stanhope), and Erin (Alisha Newton) and Kiley and Nathan. What was it like getting to explore those love stories?

I loved being able to delve more deeply into the lives of these characters and hopefully the audience will enjoy seeing different types of romance and different aspects of relationships in the show.

As in season one, the love triangle between Jackie, Cole and Alex continues. It’s clear Jackie is still dealing with feelings for both Alex and Cole. Why have Jackie and Alex give it another go?

Alex is safe space for Jackie. She knows that on paper he should be the perfect boyfriend for her. He forgives her and is sweet to her when she’s at her most vulnerable which makes her — and us — love him even more. Of course, there’s no denying they are really attracted to each other, especially this season after Alex’s glow up.

When Jackie tells Alex about what happened with Cole, it still doesn’t stop him from wanting to pursue things with Jackie again. Why was he so forgiving this time?

Because, as he says, he can’t get over her. I think many of us have been in a relationship, or have had a crush, where we forgive someone for something, or give a relationship another try (even if the smart thing to do would be to walk away) because we really like that person and want it to work out.

Alex and Cole seem cordial despite there being the elephant in the room of their feelings towards Jackie. Can you reflect on their dynamic this season? Will there ever be any bond there if one of them is bound to have their heart broken again?

Yes, we wanted to acknowledge that, though they buried the hatchet at the end of season one and are now (in theory) friends again, Alex has always suspected that something might have happened between Cole and Jackie. But also, he doesn’t really want to know, so there is an unease hanging in the air between them. Ultimately, they are brothers and although they are often at loggerheads or have a hard time with each other, they have an unbreakable bond and love for each other even when they are fighting.

We also see Jackie reveal her love for Cole, only for Alex to hear that confession as well. What can you tease of where we see the three of them go from here?

Jackie’s dilemma is that she genuinely loves both brothers. In terms of where they go from here, I think they all have some work to do emotionally in order to come back from the repercussions of that night.

For season three, will Jackie decide on where her heart truly lies or do you envision it continuing to be a struggle for her?

At the heart of our show is a love triangle and I don’t know if those can ever really be truly resolved, as someone is always going to get their heart broken!

The season also ended with a medical scare that’s sure to strongly impact the family. What can you tease of what is in store for the Walter family in season three?

Obviously, this is a huge thing for our characters to deal with, and the fallout from this will continue to affect the whole family for some time.

Vuelta a Espana: Protests force early end to stage 11

Pidcock made a move on the final climb and Vingegaard was the only rider able to go with him.

“It is hard to describe the disappointment to be honest. I felt like today was my day,” said Pidcock.

Vingegaard said: “It’s my son’s birthday – he’s one year old today so I wanted to win for him.

“We worked all day for it and to not get the chance is obviously a big shame.”

Prior to stage 11, riders had met for a safety meeting, while the Professional Cyclists’ Association called for better security at an event at which the Israel-Premier Tech team have been targeted.

On stage five, the Israel-Premier Tech team were held up by protestors holding pro-Palestinian flags and banners.

Italian rider Simone Petilli, who competes for the Intermarche-Wanty team, fell on stage 10 when protestors ran on to the road.

Petilli wrote on social media before Wednesday’s stage: “Please, we are just cyclists and we are doing our job, but if it will continue like this our safety is not guaranteed anymore, and we feel in danger! We just want to race.”

Following stage 11, Pidcock said: “Putting us in danger isn’t going to help your cause.”

The UCI statement added that it “expresses its full solidarity and support to the teams and their staff, as well as to the riders” who they said “must be able to exercise their profession and passion in optimal conditions of safety and serenity”.

Vuelta organisers said in a statement that the race “respects and defends the right to peaceful demonstration” but “cannot tolerate any acts that put at risk the physical safety of the participants or any member of the race caravan”.

Israel-Premier Tech ruled out pulling out of the race, saying the team “remains committed” to the event.

The team added: “Any other course of action sets a dangerous precedent in the sport, not only for Israel-Premier Tech, but for all teams.

“Israel-Premier Tech has repeatedly expressed its respect for everyone’s right to protest, as long as these protests remain peaceful and do not compromise the safety of the peloton.

“We thank the race organisers and the UCI for their continued support and co-operation, as well as the teams and riders that have expressed their support both publicly and privately and, of course, our fans.”

Israel’s military launched a campaign in Gaza in response to the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on 7 October 2023, in which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 others were taken hostage.

At least 63,633 people have been killed in Gaza since then, according to the territory’s health ministry.

Stage 12 of 21 on Thursday is scheduled to take place over 144.9km from Laredo to Los Corrales de Buelna.

  • Demi Moore speaks out on Bruce Willis’ heartbreaking dementia battle and defends his wife

Demi Moore speaks out on Bruce Willis’ heartbreaking dementia battle and defends his wife

Demi Moore has spoken candidly about her ex-husband Bruce Willis’ battle with frontotemporal dementia, offering rare insight into how the Hollywood legend’s personality has shifted since his diagnosis. Speaking during a recent appearance on Oprah Winfrey’s podcast, the actress shared her perspective not only as a former spouse but also as someone who continues to stand alongside his family during a painful chapter.

Moore, who was married to Willis from 1987 to 2000 and shares three daughters with him, described how the actor’s once vibrant and commanding energy has given way to new traits. She admitted it was difficult to watch such a strong figure undergo changes brought on by dementia but emphasised the importance of compassion and acceptance. “It’s difficult. It’s hard to see somebody who was so vibrant and strong and so directed shift into this other part of themselves,” she explained.

She went on to highlight how crucial it is to meet a loved one with dementia where they are, rather than clinging to who they used to be. “When you do that, there is an incredible sweetness, something soft and tender and loving,” Moore said, noting that moments of presence can bring joy even in the midst of loss.

The Charlie’s Angels star also defended Willis’ wife, Emma Heming Willis, who has faced criticism for decisions regarding his care. Moore praised Emma for her resilience and dedication, calling her role as caregiver both courageous and selfless. Heming recently revealed she made the difficult choice to move Willis into a separate home with professional care staff, ensuring their daughters Mabel and Evelyn can maintain stability in their lives.

Bruce Willis, now 70, first went public with his aphasia diagnosis in 2022 before announcing his retirement from acting. His condition later progressed to frontotemporal dementia, a degenerative brain disease that affects speech, understanding, and behaviour. Despite this, the blended Willis family remains close, often gathering to celebrate milestones and support each other.

Moore’s words reflect a family united in love and resilience, navigating the realities of dementia while holding on to the humanity and spirit of one of Hollywood’s most beloved stars.
