As the 50% tariff impasse continues, is retaliation an option for India?

Prolonged 50% tariffs could shave off as much as 0.8% of India’s GDP

US President Donald Trump’s 50% tariffs on India came into effect on 27 August. So far, rather than retaliating, India has put forth a carefully orchestrated geopolitical response to signal its displeasure to the US.

There’s been the much publicised attempt at a rapprochement with China, and striking images of Prime Minister Narendra Modi sharing a limousine ride with Russian President Vladimir Putin splashed across the media from the sidelines of a security forum meeting in Tianjin.

Domestically, Modi has announced some help for struggling exporters and there are tax cuts on the anvil to mitigate the impact on exports.

But Delhi finds itself in an unenviable spot. The tariff impasse with its largest trading partner has continued far longer than anticipated, trade negotiations with Washington have come to a halt and the already damaged ties are fraying further with daily admonishments from US officials.

    The repercussions are significant.

Prolonged 50% tariffs could shave off as much as 0.8% of India’s GDP, according to some estimates.

India’s exports to the US could drop by as much as $35bn (£26.1bn) this financial year and put hundreds of thousands of jobs across key industries like textiles, gems and jewellery and leather at risk.

Pushed to the brink, the question some are asking is whether Delhi will retaliate? And if not, what are its least damaging options?

India-China ties are seeing a thaw after years of tensions

If the past is any precedent, India hasn’t shied away from retaliation. It imposed steep tariffs on some 28 US products, including almonds and apples back in 2019, when Washington had refused to exempt the country from higher taxes on steel and aluminium.

But this time, escalating the trade war will not be in India’s interests, say experts.

“Retaliation is a very costly and unproductive strategy because at the end of the day India depends more on the United States than is the case in reverse,” Ashley Tellis, a professor at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, told The Wire portal in an interview.

At $86bn, India’s goods exports to the US are nearly three times higher than the US’s goods exports to India.

India’s symbolic responses “in support of a multipolar world” including deepening engagement with Japan, China and Russia have been wise moves, Ajay Srivastava of the Delhi-based Global Trade Research Initiative told the BBC, adding that direct retaliation at this stage would be premature.

“India should wait at least six months to assess the full extent of US actions—not just the 50% tariffs but also any additional measures that may follow, given the unpredictability of Trump and his advisers,” Srivastava said.

Delhi needn’t look further than towards its bigger neighbour north to understand what tit-for-tat trade measures can potentially do. Tariffs on China went up to some 150% when Beijing slapped retaliatory duties.

India should also be wary, some experts say, of the US expanding tariffs to non-goods areas like services, digital trade and outsourcing in the event of an escalation. These make up 6% of India’s GDP.

US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has already warned of changes to H1B non-immigrant visas, 70% of which are used up by Indians, indicating that the impact of tense geopolitical ties has transcended trade.

India’s exports to the US could drop by as much as $35bn this financial year

So given the risks of retaliating are clearly very high, what are India’s next best options?

The best buffer against the risk of US tariffs will be diversifying export markets, say experts.

It is time for India to “cultivate economic and diplomatic ties with countries like Mexico, Canada, and China. This also means strengthening trade and cooperation with other governments concerned about the impact of Trump’s tariffs, particularly in Europe and Latin America”, Kaushik Basu, former chief economic adviser to the Government of India, wrote in a recent piece for Project Syndicate.

Srivastava agrees. Using diplomatic coalitions, and trade diversification is India’s best bet to “build pressure” on Washington, he says, keeping the option of targeted retaliation only as a measure of last resort.

There are some indications already that Delhi has been actively working to expedite other trade pacts.

After signing a comprehensive agreement with the UK in July, Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said the India-EU free trade deal was in advanced stages of negotiation.

But diversification will not be a quick fix.

“For an individual exporter, it is going to be much harder to find new customers in markets where they have previously not had partnerships, customers, or relationships,” Srividya Jandhyala, a Singapore based trade expert, told the BBC.

Another challenge for Indian exporters will be the costs of switching to new markets.

“If new clients or customers need specialised product lines, machinery, equipment, or components, Indian exporters have to decide if it is worth it for them to invest in this when there is a high degree of uncertainty about future tariffs” Jandhyala said.

In the longer run though, there will be no option to find new trading partners given the mercurial nature of Trump’s policies, say experts.

Mr Srivastava says the government must accelerate market diversification on a war-footing by doing things like leading sector-specific trade missions to alternative markets and establishing export hubs in countries like the UAE and Mexico to bypass high US tariffs.

And now more than ever, “domestic competitiveness needs urgent strengthening through technology and quality upgradation funds” for exporters, he says.

Otherwise India will further cede exports market share to other Asian peers like Bangladesh and Vietnam, who currently enjoy relatively better terms of trade with the US.

  • Dwayne Johnson will rock awards season

Dwayne Johnson will rock awards season

He was a superhero in Black Adam, an archaeologist in Jumanji, and a demigod in Moana. Is Dwayne Johnson about to add “Oscar nominee” to his résumé?

On Oct. 3, the actor and former professional wrestler known as the Rock brings the story of mixed martial artist and UFC fighter Mark Kerr to the big screen in A24’s The Smashing Machine. Johnson stars alongside Oscar-nominated actress Emily Blunt (Oppenheimer) in the film that’s written and directed by indie darling Benny Safdie.

    More from Gold Derby

Kerr rose to prominence during the early days of the Ultimate Fighting Championship while privately struggling with a serious drug addiction. To portray Kerr, Johnson underwent a dramatic physical transformation, aided by two-time Academy Award-winning makeup artist Kazu Hiro (Darkest Hour, Bombshell). The performance is already generating awards buzz, particularly after the film’s debut at the Venice Film Festival. Let’s take a look at The Smashing Machine‘s instant Oscar predictions.

    PICTURE

The Smashing Machine currently ranks within the top 20 of Gold Derby’s Oscar odds for Best Picture, with a 5 percent chance of being nominated. Movies about wrestlers have received Oscar nominations in the past, but never in the top category. The Wrestler (2008) earned acting bids for Mickey Rourke and Marisa Tomei, while Foxcatcher (2014) received five total nominations, including for Steve Carell and Mark Ruffalo. In recent years, The Iron Claw (2023) starring Zac Efron and Unstoppable (2024) starring Jharrel Jerome were both KO’ed at the Oscars, earning zero nominations. The Smashing Machine is now hoping to make history for wrestling films.

Johnson has skyrocketed up the Gold Derby Best Actor chart in recent weeks, now coming in fifth place for a nomination. Taking on a physically demanding role in a sports movie has helped other leading men get into the category, including the aforementioned Rourke, Will Smith (Ali), Sylvester Stallone (Rocky), Denzel Washington (The Hurricane), plus Robert De Niro (Raging Bull), who won. Johnson’s character of the mixed martial artist, nicknamed the Smashing Machine, feels right at home on that list of former Best Actor Oscar nominees.

A24 has not yet confirmed whether Blunt will campaign in lead or supporting for playing Dawn Staples, the ex-wife of Mark Kerr. A final decision for her category placement will be made later. The British actress currently ranks in 10th place for Best Actress, and 50th place for Best Supporting Actress, but it’s still early this Oscar season and the odds are likely to change once a film is more widely seen.

Nominations for the 2026 Oscars will be announced Jan. 22.

Sri Lanka opener Pathum Nissanka overtook legendary batter Tillakaratne Dilshan to become the third-highest run-getter for his team on Wednesday.

Nissanka made this upward movement in the charts during the first T20I against Zimbabwe. During the match, Nissanka continued his consistent run across all formats, scoring 55 in 32 balls, with four boundaries and two sixes. His runs came at a strike rate of 171.87.

Now in 66 T20Is for Sri Lanka, he has scored 1,909 runs at an average of 30.79, with a strike rate of 122.68. He has 15 half-centuries in the format with the best score of 90.

Dilshan is in fourth spot now, with 1,889 runs in 80 matches and 79 innings at an average of 28.19 and a strike rate of 120.54, with a century and 13 fifties. His best score is 104*.

At the top two spots are: Kusal Perera (2,084 runs in 81 matches and 80 innings at an average of 27.06, with a century and 15 fifties to his name) and Kusal Mendis (2,045 runs in 82 matches and innings at an average of 25.88, with 16 half-centuries and a best score of 86).

Pathum Nissanka’s cameo of 41 helped Sri Lanka secure a four-wicket win over Zimbabwe in the first T20I at Harare on Wednesday and take a lead of 1-0 in the three-match series.

Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to field first.

Brian Bennett (81 in 57 balls, with 12 fours) stitched a 50-run partnership for the third wicket with skipper Sikandar Raza (28 in 22 balls, with two fours and a six) and another 51-run stand with Ryan Burl (17).

Zimbabwe posted 175/7 in their 20 overs.

Dushmantha Chameera (3/30) was the pick of the bowlers for SL. Nuwan Thushara, Maheesh Theekshana, and Dushan Hemantha took a wicket apiece.

Sri Lanka got off to a solid start with a 96-run opening stand between Nissanka (55 in 32 balls, with four boundaries and two sixes) and Kusal Mendis (38 in 35 balls, with four boundaries).

SL suffered a hiccup, reduced to 142/6, with Richard Ngarava (2/19), Blessing Muzarabani, Tinotenda Maposa, Brad Evans and Raza getting one wicket each.

However, Kamindu (41* in 16 balls, with a four and four sixes) and Dushan Hemantha (14* in nine balls, with two fours) took SL to the target with four wickets and five balls in hand.

Kamindu’s high-impact knock earned him the ‘Player of the Match’ award.

  • PS5 Headsets Just Got Better for PC Gamers Thanks to PlayStation Link Software Update

PS5 Headsets Just Got Better for PC Gamers Thanks to PlayStation Link Software Update

Thanks to new Windows 10 and 11 software for PlayStation 5 audio devices like the Pulse Elite headset and Pulse Explore earbuds, you can now get their full range of functionality when using them on PC. This is particularly handy for those who game on both the PS5 and PC, as these first-party are some of the best PS5 headsets around and are now essentially cross-platform devices through the PlayStation Link PC driver.

While these devices worked on PC before, they didn’t have proper software support which limited their versatility. Per the official PlayStation support page, the driver will automatically install when you connect the PS Link USB adapter. The new PS Link driver isn’t as robust as apps you’ll see for new Razer headsets or SteelSeries earbuds, for example, but it’s an upgrade from previously having no PC software support. With the PS Link PC driver, you can manually adjust volume on the OS, toggle your microphone and adjust the sidetone mic feedback volume, switch EQ presets, and update the device’s firmware if needed. You can also monitor battery life through the driver.

A look at the new PS Link PC software driver with the Pulse Elite headset.

The biggest addition here is being able to swap audio profiles through the EQ presets, so you can customize your sound experience and get more out of the headset and/or earbuds. The standard setting offers a balanced and flat sound experience, but you can adjust frequencies to boost bass and/or lower treble, for example.

If you’re considering getting new audio gear in light of this update, be sure to check out our reviews of the Pulse Elite headset and Pulse Explore earbuds, or check out our roundup of the best PS5 headsets we’ve tested. And in case you missed it, catch up on the latest State of Play stream that centered around the upcoming James Bond game 007: First Light.

  • Imran Khan’s nephew granted bail in Jinnah House case

Imran Khan’s nephew granted bail in Jinnah House case

    LAHORE:

An anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Wednesday granted post-arrest bail to Shahrez Khan, nephew of PTI’s founding chairman Imran Khan, in the Jinnah House attack case.

ATC Judge Manzer Ali Gill, after reserving judgment on arguments presented by both sides, announced the decision allowing Shahrez’s bail.

During proceedings, Shahrez’s counsel, Rana Mudassar Umar, argued that the allegation of inciting the public against his client was baseless.

He said a thorough investigation, including geofencing, produced no evidence linking Shahrez to the May 9 incident.

He pointed out that while the police challan contained details of both nominated and unidentified accused, Shahrez’s name did not appear anywhere, suggesting what he called a “forged implication.”

The counsel further contended that Shahrez was arrested more than two years after the riots, describing the arrest as politically motivated.

He submitted affidavits claiming Shahrez was in Chitral from May 6 to 12, 2023, at the time of the violence.

Despite this, he said, police arrested him and even alleged recovery of a club from him after two years, which the defence termed a “mockery.”

He maintained that over 500 accused in the case had already secured bail, yet Shahrez was singled out for arrest. He also noted that Shahrez, an athlete, was being unfairly targeted, which could harm Pakistan’s image abroad.

The prosecution opposed the plea, insisting that evidence existed against the accused and urging the court to reject the bail. However, the court granted Shahrez post-arrest bail.

Meanwhile, the ATC also fixed hearing of the bail petition filed by Shahrez’s brother, Sher Shah, for September 4.

Police officials have been directed to produce the case record at the hearing.

Sher Shah’s counsel argued that his client was also implicated for political reasons. He said the police alleged Sher Shah appeared in a video with his cousin, Barrister Hassan Niazi—convicted earlier by a military court—at the crime scene. However, the defence maintained that mere presence in a video did not establish guilt.

Shahrez was arrested on August 21 and produced before court the next day, while his brother Sher Shah was taken into custody on August 22 and presented before court on August 23.
