Argentina v England: Henry Slade out of tour with hand injury

Henry Slade is out of the tour of Argentina and the United States with a hand injury, leaving England with inexperienced midfield options as they attempt to seal a series win over the Pumas.

Slade played the full 80 minutes in the 35-12 first-Test win over Argentina in La Plata on Saturday but will miss the rematch in San Juan this weekend.

Seb Atkinson made his first Test appearance in La Plata while Max Ojomoh, Luke Northmore and Oscar Beard – the other specialist centres in the 36-player squad – are still uncapped.

Fraser Dingwall and Ollie Lawrence, who emerged as England’s first-choice midfield during the Six Nations, are both injured while the versatile Elliot Daly has returned from the British and Irish Lions tour of Australia with a fractured arm.

Slade, who won his 73rd England cap against Argentina, was also a back-up option at fly-half, with uncapped Charlie Atkinson the only direct cover for the experienced George Ford.

Co-captains Ford and Jamie George and flanker Sam Underhill – with 102, 100 and 41 caps respectively – are now the only players with more than 40 caps in the squad.

England, whose tour will conclude with a one-off Test against the United States on 19 July, have no plans to summon a replacement for Slade.

Steve Borthwick’s side produced one of their best performances of the head coach’s reign in La Plata, surviving the sin-binning of Alex Coles and Seb Atkinson to lead 3-0 at half-time, before accelerating away to victory via four second-half tries.

The win takes England above their opponents to fifth in the world ranking.

The Pumas, who rested some of their France-based players for the first Test, have brought in Bordeaux-Begles second row Guido Petti for the second game.

The 30-year-old, who scored a try in their Top 14 final loss against Toulouse on 28 June, will join up with Harlequins next season.

  • Astronomers use deep-space flashes to find Universe’s missing matter

Astronomers use deep-space flashes to find Universe’s missing matter

Think of the universe as a giant cosmic puzzle, and for years, a big piece of it was missing. About half of the universe’s mysterious dark matter is packed into dense clumps called halos, which help hold galaxies together. However, these halos contain less than half of the normal matter, which includes stars, planets, and people. Only a small bit of it glows as stars or floats as gas inside galaxies.

So where’s the rest? It’s hiding in plain sight, spread out as a super-thin, invisible mist of ionized gas between galaxies and around galaxy clusters. This ghostly gas is nearly impossible to see, but it plays a huge role in shaping galaxies and the universe itself.

Now, scientists have found a clever way to track it down: by using fast radio bursts (FRBs), brief, powerful flashes of energy from distant galaxies. As these bursts travel through space, they pass through the hidden gas, helping scientists finally measure just how much normal matter is out there.

Now, for the first time, astronomers from Caltech and the Center for Astrophysics Harvard & Smithsonian have directly found and measured this missing matter. They used fast radio bursts (FRBs), brief, powerful flashes of radio waves from distant galaxies, as cosmic flashlights. As these signals traveled through space, they slowed down slightly depending on how much matter they passed through.

New hints that dark matter could be made up of dark photons

By analyzing 69 FRBs located at distances ranging from about 11.74 million to about 9.1 billion light-years away, the team discovered that about 76% of the universe’s normal matter lies in the intergalactic medium, solving a long-standing cosmic mystery.

FRB 20230521B, located 9.1 billion light-years away, now holds the record for the most distant FRB ever recorded. Although over a thousand FRBs have been found, only about 100 have been traced back to their home galaxies, which is crucial for knowing how far away they are. The new study relied on 69 of these well-localized FRBs.

    FRB 20221219A
This artist’s diagram depicts some of the 60 FRBs in the study—FRB 20221219A, FRB 20231220A, and FRB 20240123A—which were used to track the journey of gas through the space between galaxies and map the cosmic web.

Out of those 69, 39 were discovered using the Deep Synoptic Array-110 (DSA-110), a network of 110 radio telescopes in California built specifically to detect and locate FRBs. This array identified the bursts and their host galaxies, while telescopes in Hawaii and San Diego measured the distances to them. The remaining 30 FRBs came from other telescopes around the world, mainly in Australia.

The team used these FRBs to detect the missing ordinary matter. As the radio waves from fast radio bursts (FRBs) travel through space to reach Earth, they are stretched out into different wavelengths, much like a prism turns sunlight into a rainbow. How much the waves spread out depends on how much matter they pass through along the way.

FRBs solved a decades-old mystery of missing matter

Astronomers have now confirmed where the universe’s normal matter is hiding. They found that about 76% of it is floating in the vast space between galaxies, called the intergalactic medium. Around 15% is in the outer regions of galaxies, known as galactic halos, and the rest, less than 10%, is inside galaxies, in stars or cold gas. This matches what computer models had predicted, but it’s the first time we’ve seen it confirmed through observations.

These findings are important because they help scientists understand how galaxies form and grow. They also show that fast radio bursts (FRBs), brief, powerful flashes of radio waves from space, can help solve big mysteries in physics. One of those mysteries is the mass of neutrinos, tiny particles that barely interact with anything.

According to the standard model of physics, neutrinos should have no mass, but we now know they do—just a very tiny amount. Figuring out their exact mass could lead to discoveries that go beyond what we currently know about how the universe works.

Vikram Ravi, assistant professor of astronomy at Caltech, said, “This is just the beginning of the use of FRBs in cosmology. In the future, Caltech’s DSA-2000 radio telescope in the Nevada desert, currently in the planning stage, will build upon studies like this one. The radio array will find and localize up to 10,000 FRBs per year, dramatically enhancing their role as probes of normal matter and deepening our overall knowledge of the extreme blasts.”

Weather tracker: supercharged storms hit Texas’s ‘Flash Flood Alley’ | Texas

Texas was hit by catastrophic flash floods on Friday after powerful thunderstorms unleashed torrential rainfall across the region. Kerr County, in the south-central Hill Country, received more than 300mm of rain in just a few hours.

As of Sunday evening, at least 68 people had been confirmed dead, and 28 girls were missing after flood waters tore through a summer camp.

In just two hours, the Guadalupe River surged by more than 6 metres (20ft), sweeping away vehicles and inundating homes.

The storms were supercharged by moisture from the remnants of Tropical Storm Barry, which had struck Mexico earlier in the week and drawn saturated air from the Gulf, and instability in the atmosphere facilitated by a low-level jet stream. Climate change is expected to increase the likelihood of these events, as warmer air can hold more moisture.

The Hill Country’s rugged topography, marked by steep hills, canyons, and valleys, amplifies the risk and impact of flash flooding, and it is often referred to as “Flash Flood Alley”. On top of that, the area’s limestone and granite terrain exacerbates runoff, because water struggles to soak into the ground.

Meanwhile, what began as a tropical depression near the north-west of the Philippines rapidly intensified into Typhoon Danas over the weekend and struck Taiwan on Sunday morning with winds reaching 85mph and torrential rain. Almost 3,000 people had to evacuate their homes.

Originally expected to head towards Thailand, the storm altered its course over the weekend, veering northwards across the Taiwan strait. On Sunday, more than 150mm of rainfall was recorded in parts of Taiwan, causing landslides and flash flooding. Further heavy rainfall hit the region on Monday morning.

Typhoon Danas is projected to continue its path north-east across the South China Sea, hitting south-east China by midweek. Yellow weather warnings have been issued in Fujian and southern Zhejiang provinces, where wind speeds may reach up to 90mph and more than 130mm of rainfall is expected by Wednesday. However, the exact trajectory of the storm remains uncertain and may shift in the coming days.

Although Thailand was spared a direct hit, the typhoon has amplified the region’s monsoon, intensifying the south-westerly winds and drawing in more saturated air from the surrounding ocean. Consequently, northern Thailand has seen an increased humidity and widespread heavy rainfall, which is expected to reach over 90mm in 24 hours in places, bringing the risk of flash flooding and landslides to 33 provinces, particularly near the Mekong River.

Lando Norris reveals ‘exhausting’ toll of British GP victory and title battle with Piastri | Lando Norris

Lando Norris described his victory at the British Grand Prix and his intense battle with Oscar Piastri for the world championship as exhausting, but is hopeful he has established some momentum for the next round in Belgium.

“It’s two wins, but they’ve not come easy by any means,” he said, after following up his win in Austria at Silverstone. “We’ve had good fights, but they’re pretty strenuous, exhausting weekends because you’re fighting for hundredths and thousandths and you’re fighting for perfection every session and I’m against some pretty good drivers. So, it takes a lot out of you, especially when you have a race like Sunday.”

Norris’s maiden win at Silverstone secured his first career back-to-back wins. Both races were high pressure head-to-head fights with his McLaren teammate Piastri, with little to choose between the two drivers in either meeting.

On Sunday Piastri had been leading, with Norris challenging him hard, until the Australian was given a 10-second penalty for braking erratically at a safety car restart. It allowed Norris to take the lead when Piastri took his penalty. Norris went on to win a demanding race in treacherous conditions that caught many drivers out and he felt he had needed to be at the top of his game to defeat his teammate twice in succession.

Norris now has four wins to Piastri’s five this year and has closed the gap to the Australian to just eight points, with 12 races left. The 25-year-old has struggled with the McLaren at times this season, not enjoying the feel of the grip from the front of the car, and this has been costly on occasion, particularly in qualifying.

However in Austria McLaren adjusted his front suspension and Norris confirmed that it has been an improvement. The British driver may now be on something of a roll but was acutely aware he would have to deliver week in week out to maintain his title aspirations.

“I’ve had two good weekends and, of course, I would love to continue that momentum, but it still requires more consistency,” he said. “Two weekends doesn’t mean anything otherwise. And I just need to keep it up and keep working hard.”

Piastri was furious with his penalty, imposed because the stewards ruled his sudden braking had forced Max Verstappen to take evasive action. However, the McLaren team principal, Andrea Stella, suggested that Verstappen may have been deliberately gaming the system to make the incident appear more serious than it was.

“We’ll have to see also if other competitors kind of made the situation look worse than what it is,” he said. “Because we know that as part of the race-craft, some competitors definitely have the ability to make others look like they are causing severe infringement when they are not.”

Justin Bieber Shared A Pointed Statement About Hailey Bieber Following Reports That She Feels “Drained” And “Unsupported” By Him

In the past few months, there’s been a lot of chatter about Justin Bieber’s well-being, and with that has come plenty of speculation about his marriage to Hailey Bieber.

To summarize, Justin has been very active on social media this year, often venting to his followers on Instagram about fame, work, and life. Notably, a number of his cryptic IG posts have made reference to love and relationships, which, of course, have had fans wondering if everything is OK between him and Hailey.

Since they tied the knot in 2018, the Biebers — who share a soon-to-be one-year-old son, Jack Blues — have struggled to avoid divorce speculation. However, the breakup chatter reached new heights in March when Justin made some strange comments on Hailey’s first Mother’s Day, and things then ramped up again in May when he shared a bizarre reaction to her solo Vogue cover.

If you missed it, Justin marked Hailey’s milestone Vogue cover by rehashing a “huge fight” they’d had where he previously told her “she would never be on the cover of vogue.” As for the Mother’s Day comments, JB marked the special day by proclaiming on IG story that “mothers day sucks ass.”

In mid-June, Hailey was spotted on a couple of occasions without her engagement ring. And though she soon had it back on again, a source told Entertainment Tonight on June 26 that “things have been rocky” between the couple and that Hailey “has been frustrated by Justin’s antics on Instagram.”

On Sunday, the 31-year-old — who, in case you missed it, recently changed his Instagram handle from @justinbieber to @lilbieber — posted a series of photos showing himself and Hailey hugging in front of a sunset with beaming smiles on their faces. He captioned it: “My forever n always 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕,” and Hailey liked the post in return.

Well, that seems like a pretty clear message about where JB and Hailey are at, and it also echoes the Rhode founder’s previous comments to Vogue about how most of the rumors about her private life are “not real.” “That’s the thing,” she told the outlet in her cover May interview. “I have a real life. My real life is that I get to wake up to my beautiful family and my son and my friends and I have people that know me and love me and I love them.”

In the same interview, Justin said that marrying Hailey was “the smartest thing” he’d ever done. So, there you have it!

Musk-Trump feud escalates with ‘America Party’ announcement – World

More than a month after their initial social media bluster, Elon Musk has announced the formation of a new US political party in response to US President Donald Trump signing his sweeping tax and spending bill into law.

Trump criticised the new party announcement, calling it “ridiculous”, while Musk, once a close ally of the president, said the party would aim to unseat the Republican lawmakers in Congress who backed the bill, in next year’s midterm elections.

Investors in Musk’s Tesla were rattled by concerns that the billionaire’s deepening involvement in politics would shift his focus away from the automaker at a tumultuous time.

Here’s how the spat between the world’s most powerful man and its richest has unfolded:

June 3: Musk attacks Trump’s top legislative priority — a sweeping tax cut and spending bill.

“I’m sorry, but I just can’t stand it anymore. This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination. Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it,” he wrote on his X platform.

June 5, around noon ET: Trump says he anticipates Musk criticising him personally.

“Look, Elon and I had a great relationship. I don’t know if we will anymore,” Trump said in the Oval Office. “He said the most beautiful things about me, and he hasn’t said bad about me personally, but I’m sure that’ll be next. But I’m, I’m very disappointed in Elon. I’ve helped Elon a lot.”

June 5, 12.10 pm ET: Musk posts on X: “Slim Beautiful Bill for the win.”

June 5, 12.25 pm ET: Musk responds to a clip of Trump from the Oval Office saying Musk knew the inner workings of the bill.

“False. This bill was never shown to me even once and was passed in the dead of night so fast that almost no one in Congress could even read it!” Musk wrote on X.

June 5, 1.57 pm ET: Musk launches a poll on X with the question: “Is it time to create a new political party in America that actually represents the 80 per cent in the middle?”

June 5, 2.37 pm ET: Trump hits back on his social media platform, Truth Social.

“Elon was ‘wearing thin,’ I asked him to leave, I took away his EV Mandate that forced everyone to buy Electric Cars that nobody else wanted (that he knew for months I was going to do!), and he just went Crazy!”
“The easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elons Governmental Subsidies and Contracts. I was always surprised that Biden didn’t do it!”

June 5, 4.06 pm ET: Trump defends the spending bill and takes a swipe at Musk: “I don’t mind Elon turning against me, but he should have done so months ago. This is one of the Greatest Bills ever presented to Congress,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

June 5, 4.09 pm ET: Musk posts on X in response to Trump’s comments about government contracts: “In light of the President’s statement about cancellation of my government contracts, @SpaceX will begin decommissioning its Dragon spacecraft immediately.”

June 5, 4.11 pm ET: Musk writes “yes” on X in response to another user posting: “President vs Elon. Who wins? My money’s on Elon. Trump should be impeached and JD Vance should replace him.”

June 5, 4.26 pm ET: Musk writes: “The Trump tariffs will cause a recession in the second half of this year.”

June 5, 11:29 pm ET: Trump tells Politico, “Oh it’s okay,” and, “It’s going very well, never done better,” when asked about his public breakup with Musk, the news outlet reported.

White House aides have scheduled a call on Friday with Musk to broker peace, Politico reported.

June 6, 08:12 am ET (5:12 pm PKT): Trump is not interested in talking to Musk, a White House source with knowledge of the matter says on Friday.

June 6, 6:23 pm ET: When asked whether he would consider cutting government contracts held by Musk, Trump says he will look at everything.

June 7, 12:37 pm ET Trump, in a telephone interview with NBC News, says his relationship with Musk is over and warned there would be “serious consequences” if Musk funds US Democrats.

“No,” Trump tells NBC when asked if he had any desire to repair his relationship with Musk. “I have no intention of speaking to him,” Trump says.

June 9, 3:31 pm ET Trump says he has no plans to discontinue Starlink at the White House but might move his Tesla off-site.

June 11, 03:05 am ET Musk says he regrets some of the posts he made last week about Trump, in a post on X.

June 30, 3:08 pm ET Musk starts a series of posts on X criticising the new bill.

“It is obvious with the insane spending of this bill, which increases the debt ceiling by a record five trillion dollars that we live in a one-party country the Porky Pig Party!!”

June 30, 4:02 pm ET Musk writes: “Every member of Congress who campaigned on reducing government spending and then immediately voted for the biggest debt increase in history should hang their head in shame!”
“And they will lose their primary next year if it is the last thing I do on this Earth.”

July 1, 12:44 am ET Trump posts on social media platform Truth Social, suggesting DOGE look into subsidies received by Musk’s companies to save money.

“Elon Musk knew, long before he so strongly Endorsed me for President, that I was strongly against the EV Mandate. It is ridiculous, and was always a major part of my campaign. Electric cars are fine, but not everyone should be forced to own one. Elon may get more subsidy than any human being in history, by far, and without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa. No more Rocket launches, Satellites, or Electric Car Production, and our Country would save a Fortune. Perhaps we should have DOGE take a good, hard, look at this? Big Money To Be Saved!!!”

July 1, 12:57 am ET Musk responds to Trump’s comments on X: “I am literally saying Cut It All. Now.”

July 4, 8:57 am ET Musk creates a poll on X, asking people if they would want him to create the America Party.

“Independence Day is the perfect time to ask if you want independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system!” The vote ends with 65.4% in favour of creating the party with 34.6pc against.

July 5, 3:46 pm ET Musk announces the formation of the America Party on X.

“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it! When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy.”

“Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”

July 6, 6:20 pm ET Trump posts on Truth Social about Musk’s formation of a third political party.

“I am saddened to watch Elon Musk go completely ‘off the rails,’ essentially becoming a Train Wreck over the past five weeks. He even wants to start a Third Political Party, despite the fact that they have never succeeded in the United States — The System seems not designed for them.”
