Andy hails Owen’s experience ahead of call-up
Head coach Andy Farrell insists his son Owen is ready for a return to international rugby after he was called up into the squad for the Qatar Airways British & Irish Lions Tour to Australia 2025.
Owen, who has played his Test career at fly-half or inside centre, joins an elite group as he becomes only the fifth player to participate in his fourth Lions Tour.
The 33-year-old, who recently rejoined Saracens from Racing 92, has six Lions caps to his name from his three previous Tours while the most recent of his 112 England caps came at the 2023 Rugby World Cup.
He replaces Elliot Daly in the squad after he was ruled out for the rest of the Tour with a fractured arm sustained in the 52-12 win against the Queensland Reds on Wednesday.
READ MORE: The Making of Owen Farrell
Andy Farrell said: “I suppose for all of us, really, we look at international games or we look at club games, or whatever, but the person is still the person and the character is still the character.
“The player inside is still the player inside if he is fit and well and ready to fire, and we see all of that [in Owen] – that hunger has always been there.
“We see him adding to the group and injecting a bit of life and experience, as far as what he can bring to the squad.”
When asked what Owen’s reaction to being called up was, Andy Farrell said: “Well he didn’t cry like Finlay [Bealham]! I suppose that’s what happens when it’s your fourth Tour.
“He’s delighted like everyone else. It was just a very short conversation, as in ‘yep, I can get ready, get packed, ready to go.”
Owen Farrell will join the Lions’ touring party on Friday, but naturally there was disappointment for Daly who had impressed at full-back in Australia, including two tries against the Western Force.
Daly becomes the second Lions player to have their Tour ended prematurely after scrum-half Tomos Williams was ruled out with a hamstring injury following the 54-7 victory over the Force.
Andy Farrell said: “It’s disappointing for all of us, like it was for Tomos.
“In the same manner, he’s an unbelievably popular guy amongst the group and obviously he’s vastly experienced.
“The experience that he’s not just got 70-odd caps at Test level but in a Lions shirt he’s somewhat of a Lions legend in regard to the 16 times he’s pulled the shirt on and 11 consecutive games – that’s amazing, isn’t it?
“Five caps, it could have been six had he come off the bench (against South Africa in 2021), he’s a very experienced player who was back to his best as well, so it’s very sad,”

Lily Zhang hopes viral Anthony Edwards interaction, US Smash can raise sport’s profile in the States
Remember when Lily Zhang and Anthony Edwards challenged each other to an unlikely sports cross-over at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games?
With basketball star Edwards convinced he could take points off of Zhang and her USA Table Tennis teammates, their banter was one of the many viral storylines from Paris.
More importantly, though, it gave the profile of table tennis a boost in the United States ahead of the country hosting the next Olympic Games at LA 2028.
This week, Las Vegas, Nevada, holds the first-ever World Table Tennis United States Smash from 3–13 July – the first time one of the sport’s Grand Smashes, the top tier of the global circuit akin to the golf majors or tennis grand slams, is played in the United States.
It’ll be another chance for Zhang and her teammates – as well as the sport’s big names from around the world, who’ll be travelling to play in front of a U.S. audience for the first time – to propel table tennis into the consciousness of sports fans in the country.
“It was great that we got more eyes on the interaction but also our sport,” Zhang told Olympics.com at the recent World Championships of her exchanges with Edwards in Paris. “[Table tennis] is not the biggest sport in the U.S. yet, so we’re always looking to get more exposure.”
Having a major tournament on home soil is an opportunity to raise the profile of table tennis in the U.S. once more. It’ll be an occasion for Zhang and her teammates to show the country that they’re still around, not just a once-every-four-years team which pops up during the Olympics.
“I think any time we come out to international tournaments to represent our country, to leave our heart out on the tables, I feel like people see that and appreciate that,” Zhang said. “We’re all just trying our best to represent our country as best as we can, and hopefully that brings more eyes to the sport.
“I think once people get a chance to watch and to come out and support [in person], they really enjoy it and find themselves getting into it.”
There’s another thing Zhang hopes to achieve at the United States Smash in Vegas: Remind the next generation of players that pursuing table tennis is a viable career option – especially with LA28 coming up.
“Hopefully, inspire younger players to pick up the racquet – and to keep playing as well, not just start. In the U.S., a lot of players stop when they go to university, so to be able to have a pathway for a professional career in table tennis, is really the main goal.”

Studying Protoplanets and Protoplanetary Disks with the Habitable Worlds Observatory
Substructures in protoplanetary disks, such as (a) spiral arms and (b) gaps, can inform the location and mass of protoplanets that shape these substructures (marked with arrows here; e.g., Dong & Fung 2017; Bae et al. 2018). Note: the panels displayed here use simulated data provided by Dong et al. (2015) for (a) and Bi & Lin (2024) for (b). — astro-ph.IM
Since the discovery of the first exoplanet orbiting a Sun-like star, the confirmation of nearly 6000 exoplanets to date – and their diversity – has revolutionized our knowledge of planetary systems in the past three decades.
Nevertheless, the majority of these planets are around mature stars (≳1 Gyr), where the planet birth environments have already dissipated. Indeed, we have only confirmed 2 forming planets (i.e., protoplanets; ≲10 Myr) residing in one single system. In comparison, we have imaged over 200 protoplanetary disks in the past decade, with many of them hosting substructures such as spirals and gaps which suggest the existence of protoplanets.
To understand the early stages of planet formation, the Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO) – with its high-contrast imaging and integral field spectroscopy capabilities – presents a unique opportunity to explore the demographics of the natal stages of planet formation and their birth environments.
We propose to image protoplanets within substructured protoplanetary disks using HWO via direct imaging, and characterize them (i.e., protoplanets, protoplanetary disks, circumplanetary disks) using integral field spectroscopy and spectropolarimetry. This effort will dramatically extend current population of protoplanets, probing and characterizing over 200 protoplanets.
By expanding the number of protoplanets by two orders of magnitude, these observations will test and refine planet formation theory and planet-disk interaction theory, and further motivate planet migration studies together with existing mature planets. The results will offer critical insight into planetary system formation and evolution, and help understand the origin of our own Solar System.

Extremophilic bacteria from extreme environments, such as the Atacama Desert, Salar de Huasco, and Antarctica, exhibit adaptations to intense UV radiation. In this study, we investigated the genomic and structural mechanisms underlying UV resistance in three bacterial isolates identified as Bacillus velezensis PQ169, Pseudoalteromonas sp. AMH3-8, and Rugamonas violacea T1-13.
Through integrative genomic analyses, we identified key genes involved in DNA-repair systems, pigment production, and spore formation. Phylogenetic analyses of aminoacidic sequences of the nucleotide excision repair (NER) system revealed conserved evolutionary patterns, indicating their essential role across diverse bacterial taxa.
Structural modeling of photolyases from Pseudoalteromonas sp. AMH3-8 and R. violacea T1-13 provided further insights into protein function and interactions critical for DNA repair and UV resistance. Additionally, the presence of a complete violacein operon in R. violacea T1-13 underscores pigment biosynthesis as a crucial protective mechanism.
In B. velezensis PQ169, we identified the complete set of genes responsible for sporulation, suggesting that sporulation may represent a key protective strategy employed by this bacterium in response to environmental stress.
Our comprehensive approach underscores the complexity and diversity of microbial adaptations to UV stress, offering potential biotechnological applications and advancing our understanding of microbial resilience in extreme conditions.
Phylogenetic tree based on the amino acid sequences of UvrA, UvrB, and UvrC proteins (NER system). Multiple sequence alignment was performed using MUSCLE on the Phylogeny.fr platform, followed by tree construction with PhyML and visualization using TreeDyn. The resulting tree was further arranged and refined using the Interactive Tree of Life (iTOL v7) tool. The maximum likelihood method was employed with 1000 bootstrap replicates, where the node sizes reflect the level of bootstrap support. Each label includes the gene name, the bacterial species, and the corresponding NCBI accession number. Three environmental strains are highlighted: Bacillus velezensis PQ-169 (green), Pseudoalteromonas sp. AMH3-8 (yellow), and Rugamonas violacea T1-13 (purple). These strains, along with other extremophilic, UV-resistant, and pathogenic bacteria, were included to compare UvrA (red clade), UvrB (blue clade), and UvrC (green clade) variations under extreme environmental conditions. — Int J Mol Sci via PubMed

Euro 2025 row as ministers to skip Wales v France game
Elliw GwawrPolitical correspondent, BBC Wales News
Reuters
Wales will face France in their second fixture at Euro 2025 in Switzerland There is “deep disappointment ” that no Welsh government minister will be at Wales’ match against France at Euro 2025.
While First Minister Eluned Morgan will be at the side’s first ever game at a major tournament when they play the Netherlands in Switzerland on Saturday, there will be no representatives for the France game on 9 July.
Culture Minister Jack Sargeant will be at the final group game against England on 13 July.
One Senedd committee member said it would be “embarrassing for our team” if there was not a presence at every game.
Eluned Morgan said the government had to balance representing the nation with value for money for the taxpayer.
Chairwoman of the culture committee, Delyth Jewell, has written to the first minister urging her to attend the France game.
She said the move “risks conveying that our women’s team is not afforded the same recognition or support as others on the international stage”.
The Welsh government said Morgan would “support our fantastic national team” at their tournament opener, adding that it had invested £1m into projects linked to the tournament “to create a lasting and positive legacy”.
But there were concerns among committee members that the government would miss an opportunity to promote Wales.
Labour Member of the Senedd for Llanelli Lee Waters said it would be “embarrassing for our team if other governments are at every match and ours were not”.
“This is an amazing opportunity for Wales and we should seize it to support the team and punch above our weight in the sporting world.”
Plaid Cymru’s spokeswoman for sport, Heledd Fychan, made a comparison with the government’s support for the men’s team at the World Cup in Qatar in 2022.
She said the then-first minister Mark Drakeford “believed it was an obligation for the Welsh government to be in attendance to not only support the team, but also to use the platform the World Cup provides to make Wales known around the world”.
She added that it was “a shame” ministers were not following the example of fans to “make our nation proud and raise the profile of Wales across the world”.
The committee urged the first minister to reconsider, especially as they were advised that French president Emmanuel Macron is expected to be there.
Jewell said a visible ministerial presence “would demonstrate the Welsh government’s commitment to gender equality in sport”.
The Welsh government said: “Qualification for the women’s Euros is an outstanding achievement and an inspiration to generations of female footballers in Wales.
“We wish our national team the very best of luck and thank them for all they are doing to represent Wales on the international stage.”
Eluned Morgan told BBC Wales: “I’m hopeful we will get through to further rounds, and if so we will need to consider whether we send a minister at that point.
“We’re trying to get the balance right between representing the nation and making sure we get good value for taxpayers.
“I just want to wish the women of Wales who are playing in that team the very best. I hope the nation will get behind them.”

Meghan Markle turns into unfair brand owner with new overcharge
Meghan Markle accused of orchestrating a ‘wine robbery’: ‘Its as bitter as her’ Meghan Markle’s new product sold at three bottles minimum has sparked major distaste among people like chef Jameson Stocks.
In light of this “great wine robbery” as he calls it, the culinary dabbler slammed the Duchess, and even sounded the alarm over her decision to put the minimum order requirement on her newest product Napa Valley rosé.
According to a report by Express UK he started by pointing out the fact that “nobody knows what it tastes like,” yet but may end up getting something that “tastes like vinegar and be as bitter as her.”
For those unversed, the three bottle minimum puts the price of the wine at “high” £22 a pop.
“It’s similar to her other products, it’s not meant to be affordable for the general public but rather caters to a more exclusive market.”
At one point he also revealed his own experience making an alcoholic product and rubbished her pricing.
“Having worked extensively in South Africa, a region known for producing some of the world’s finest wines, I’m confident that you can create top-quality wine at a fraction of the price she’s charging and still make a decent enough mark up per bottle,” he said.
Especially since the chef himself is collaborating “regularly with vineyards and growers there, for his own wine in South Africa which is slated for next year.
One aspect of Meghan’s decisions the chef did agree with was her decision to source from Napa Valley which is often called the “wine capital of America”.
Reason being “the quality of the wine is evident, which explains why she chose to align herself with Napa Valley’s reputation.”
However, despite that he pointed out “producing large quantities of wine, prices tend to drop significantly compared to what she charges” and because of this he also accused the former-royal of trying to “overcharge her loyal fan base” full of people who “might not be able to afford it.”
In his concluding words he also highlighted the current situation of the world and added, “in the current global cost of living crisis, I find it unacceptable that the price of the wine is so high.”

Smaller firms to escape ‘burdensome’ Companies House filing rules | Business
Changes to Companies House rules that would have axed an exemption allowing smaller businesses to file abbreviated accounts have been delayed amid concerns they could burden them with more red tape.
Legislation brought in by the previous Conservative administration is due to compel companies with a turnover under £10.2m, balance sheets under £5.1m and fewer than 50 employees to disclose more detail in their annual accounts from April 2027.
However, the business secretary, Jonathan Reynolds, is understood to be have reversed the move to reduce regulatory hurdles for small firms. A government source said: “We have paused them, Jonny is worried it’s too burdensome”.
Last month the government unveiled its industrial strategy in which it said it aims to “reduce regulatory burdens and speed innovation [by] cutting the administrative costs of regulation for business by 25%”.
The proposals to make companies publish more comprehensive financial information were designed to remove longstanding exemptions that allowed small firms to file “abridged accounts” and counter criticisms that the more relaxed rules for qualifying businesses had enabled fraud.
The intention had been that small companies would be required to use a set format to electronically file a profit and loss statement, which would be able to be viewed by the public and would include information such as turnover and costs.
Business groups had criticised the move saying that small companies would be forced to pay to use expensive computer software to meet the new regulations. However, Companies House had said the measures, which were set out in the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act, would “be a critical step towards improving the quality of the data on the register”.
Companies House has long faced criticism of how it polices the information that it holds. In April it emerged that the agency had collected just £1,250 in fines after being given new powers to crack down on corruption.
A spokesperson for the Department for Business and Trade said: “This government is committed to avoiding undue burdens on businesses as part of our plan for change.”
