    Palantir skeptics double down on a concern that investors have been better off ignoring

    Many analysts note that Palantir’s stock is expensive, but that hasn’t stopped the S&P 500’s top performer from adding to its huge gains

    Analysts continue to voice concerns about Palantir’s valuation in the aftermath of the software company’s blowout earnings report. But those who heeded those warnings dating back to last year would have missed out on huge stock gains.

    Palantir (PLTR) has bucked the skeptics, posting its eighth quarter in a row of accelerating revenue growth on Monday and predicting that the current quarter would mark the ninth. Meanwhile, its stock is up 8.5% in Tuesday morning trading to extend its position as the S&P 500’s top gainer of the year, up more than 130% over that span.

    While Wall Street analysts worry about the stock’s eye-popping valuation, that’s not a new concern – nor is it one that’s mattered for the stock lately. Analysts said Palantir shares were expensive last year as well, but the shares closed out 2024 up about 340%. Palantir’s stock was the top performer in the S&P 500 last year, according to Dow Jones Market Data, though it didn’t join the index until September 2024.

    The company’s market capitalization is on track to exceed $400 billion for the first time on Tuesday, which would place it 19th in the S&P 500 if current gains hold, according to Dow Jones Market Data. Wedbush’s Daniel Ives, the biggest bull on Palantir’s stock thanks to his $200 target price, predicts bigger things ahead for the software giant – namely a $1 trillion valuation within a few years.

    The bull camp among sell-side analysts is still small. After a roughly 340% rally in 2024, just three analysts had buy ratings on Palantir’s stock to end the year, compared with 12 who had neutral ratings and seven who had sell ratings. Now the “buy” camp has grown to include eight of the 29 analysts who currently cover the stock, according to FactSet data, though that includes some who haven’t updated their models recently. In any case, neutral-rated analysts make up the majority, at 17. Four analysts are outright bearish.

    For bulls, the latest earnings are a validation moment. Bank of America’s Mariana Perez Mora wrote that U.S. customer count was up 64%, “soothing concerns that growth is capped by the number of forward deployed engineers” that Palantir can maintain.

    But those who’ve held off on recommending the stock are still worried about the valuation, even as some acknowledged positives in the latest numbers.

    For instance, D.A. Davidson’s Gil Luria noted the software company’s “parabolic” growth and “significantly improved outlook” that topped the consensus view easily. “We believe Palantir is the best story in all of software,” Luria wrote

    Luria isn’t telling investors to buy the stock. It trades at about 103 times revenue expectations for this year, he added, an “unprecedented premium to any peer,” and “the only reason” he’s sticking with his neutral rating.

    Mizuho’s Gregg Moskowitz also discussed the stock’s “extreme” multiple, which he said was “dramatically above anything else in software.” But he took a mixed view of the current situation as he stuck with his neutral stance.

    “While we continue to worry that the shares could suddenly be subject to material multiple reversion at some point over the next few quarters, [Palantir’s] uniqueness demands substantial credit,” he wrote. “We believe [Palantir] is increasingly well-positioned to benefit from long-term trends in AI, government digital transformation, and industrial modernization.”

    Brent Thill of Jefferies took a harsher view on the valuation, saying that it’s “disconnected from even optimistic growth scenarios” with Palantir shares trading at 74 times estimated 2026 revenue. A 55% compound annual growth rate over four years would require the stock to trade at 25 times estimated 2028 revenue to warrant its current price, he wrote.

    Chief Executive Alex Karp colorfully alluded to some pockets of skepticism about Palantir in his shareholder letter, while vowing to forge ahead.

    “The growth rate of our business has accelerated radically, after years of investment on our part and derision by some,” he wrote. “The skeptics are admittedly fewer now, having been defanged and bent into a kind of submission. Yet we see no reason to pause, to relent, here.”

    Google outlines latest step towards creating artificial general intelligence | Artificial intelligence (AI)

    Google has outlined its latest step towards artificial general intelligence (AGI) with a new model that allows AI systems to interact with a convincing simulation of the real world.

    The Genie 3 “world model” could be used to train robots and autonomous vehicles as they engage with realistic recreations of environments such as warehouses, according to Google.

    The US technology and search company’s AI division, Google DeepMind, argues that world models are a key step to achieving AGI, a hypothetical level of AI where a system can carry out most tasks on a par with humans – not just individual tasks such as playing chess or translating languages – and potentially do someone’s job.

    DeepMind said such models would play an important role in the development of AI agents, or systems that carry out tasks autonomously.

    “We expect this technology to play a critical role as we push toward AGI, and agents play a greater role in the world,” DeepMind said.

    However, Google said Genie 3 was not yet ready for full public release and did not give a date for its launch, adding that the model had a range of limitations. The announcement comes amid ever-increasing competition in the AI market, with the chief executive of the ChatGPT developer, OpenAI, Sam Altman, sharing a screenshot on Sunday of what appeared to be the company’s latest AI model, GPT-5.

    Google said the model could also help humans experience a range of simulations for training or exploring, replicating experiences such as skiing or walking around a mountain lake. Genie 3 creates its scenarios immediately from text prompts, according to DeepMind, and the simulated environment can be altered quickly – by for instance, introducing a herd of deer on to a ski slope – with further text prompts.

    The tech company showed the Genie 3-created skiing and warehouse scenarios to journalists on Monday but is not yet releasing the model to the public. The quality of the simulations seen by the Guardian are on a par with Google’s latest video creation model, Veo 3, but they last minutes rather than the eight seconds offered by Veo 3.

    While AGI has been viewed through the prism of potentially eliminating white-collar jobs, as autonomous systems carry out an array of roles from sales agent to lawyer or accountant, world models are viewed by Google as a key technology for developing robots and autonomous vehicles.

    For instance, a recreation of a warehouse with realistic physics and people could help train a robot, as a simulation it “learned” from in training helps it achieve its goal. Google has also created a virtual agent, SIMA, that can carry out tasks in video game settings, although like Genie 3, it is not publicly available.

    Andrew Rogoyski of the Institute for People-Centred AI at the University of Surrey in the UK said world models could also help large language models – the technology that underpins chatbots such as ChatGPT.

    “If you give a disembodied AI the ability to be embodied, albeit virtually, then the AI can explore the world, or a world – and grow in capabilities as a result,” he said.

    “While AIs are trained on vast quantities of internet data, allowing an AI to explore the world physically will add an important dimension to the creation of more powerful and intelligent AIs.”

    In a research note accompanying the SIMA announcement last year, Google researchers said world models were important because large language models were effective at tasks such as planning but not at taking action on a human’s behalf.

    The Great Barrier Reef has experienced the largest annual decline in coral cover in two of the three regions since AIMS began monitoring 39 years ago. This was predominantly driven by climate change-induced heat stress leading to coral mortality from the 2024 mass bleaching event, but also by the impacts of cyclones and crown-of-thorns starfish outbreaks.

    Coral cover dropped over the year:

    • in the northern region (Cape York to Cooktown) by a quarter (from 39.8% to 30%)
    • in the central region (Cooktown to Proserpine) by 13.9% (from 33.2% to 28.6%)
    • in the southern region (Proserpine to Gladstone) by almost one third (from 38.9% to 26.9%.)

    AIMS LTMP leader Dr Mike Emslie said the effects of the substantial losses in regional hard coral cover were cushioned by the record high levels before the bleaching.

    “This year’s record losses in hard coral cover came off a high base, thanks to the record high of recent years,” he said.

    “We are now seeing increased volatility in the levels of hard coral cover. This is a phenomenon that emerged over the last 15 years and points to an ecosystem under stress. We have seen coral cover oscillate between record lows and record highs in a relatively short amount of time, where previously such fluctuations were moderate.

    “Coral cover now sits near the long-term average in each region. While the Great Barrier Reef is in comparatively better condition than many other coral reefs in the world following the global mass coral bleaching event, the impacts were serious.”

    Dr Emslie said coral reefs dominated by the Acropora species were among the most impacted by mass coral bleaching and the two cyclones.

    “We’ve said in the past that these corals are the fastest to grow and are the first to go, as they are susceptible to heat stress, cyclones and are a favourite food of crown-of-thorns starfish, and this year’s results illustrate that,” he said.

    “This is also the first time we’ve seen substantial bleaching impacts in the southern region, leading to the largest annual decline since monitoring began.”

    AIMS’ 2025 Long-Term Monitoring Program (LTMP) annual summary reports the results of reef surveys from August 2024 to May 2025 and assesses the impact of the 2024 mass bleaching event.

    A total of 124 coral reefs were surveyed. Most reefs (77) recorded hard coral cover between 10% and 30%, 33 reefs had hard coral cover between 30% and 50%, while two reefs had more than 75% and two reefs less than 10%.

    AIMS CEO Professor Selina Stead said the 2024 mass bleaching event was part of a global event that began in 2023 in the Northern Hemisphere.

    It was the fifth mass bleaching on the Great Barrier Reef since 2016 and had the largest spatial footprint recorded, with high to extreme bleaching prevalence across the three regions.

    “This year Western Australian reefs also experienced the worst heat stress on record. It’s the first time we’ve seen a single bleaching event affect almost all the coral reefs in Australia,” she said.

    “Mass bleaching events are becoming more intense and are occurring with more frequency, as evidenced by the mass bleaching events of 2024 and 2025. This was the second time in a decade that the Reef experienced mass bleaching in two consecutive years.

    “These results provide strong evidence that ocean warming, caused by climate change, continues to drive substantial and rapid impacts to Reef coral communities.

    “The future of the world’s coral reefs relies on strong greenhouse gas emissions reduction, management of local and regional pressures, and development of approaches to help reefs adapt to and recover from the impacts of climate change and other pressures.”

    Nielsen, WPP Media Strike New Audience-Measurement Data Agreement

    Nielsen and WPP Media said they struck a new agreement for the large media-buying operation to utilize Nielsen’s audience data that will include Nielsen’s tabulation of so-called “advanced” audiences into WPP Media’s systems.

    “By integrating Nielsen’s advanced audiences into WPP Open, we’re building a more seamless,
    interoperable planning and measurement ecosystem that empowers advertisers to optimize
    performance and accelerate growth,” said Nicolas Grand, WPP Media’s executive director of research and investment analytics, in a prepared statement.

    The renewal comes as Nielsen has introduced new technologies that are meant to count viewers across many different types of media, including linear and broadband. Nielsen’s Big Data + Panel national audience measurement technology relies on information about smart-TV screen viewership as well as the company’s usual panel of consumers. There has been some grumbling about use of the new data, but Nielsen executives believe the new Big Data elements have been accurately reflecting viewing patterns. Nielsen has been meeting with clients who have raised concerns about differences they notice between Nielsen’s panel-only findings and results formulated via the new technology.

    “Collaborating with leading industry players like WPP Media helps us collectively power the future
    of audience measurement and technology that actually helps advertisers connect with audiences,” said Matt Devitt, head of advertisers and agencies at Nielsen, in a statement. “These new capabilities will help drive interoperability and provide advertisers with more actionable insights to inform their campaign planning and measurement.”

    Nielsen has renewed partnership deals with seven large media buying agencies and at least one large advertiser, according to people familiar with the agreements, and many include integrations that help advertisers track “advanced” audiences, or viewers in categories that are typically based on narrower definitions than age or gender ,and may included buying habits and product preferences.

    Taylor Kitsch is staying off the field.

    The “American Primeval” star, 44, has revealed he won’t return to star in the upcoming reboot of “Friday Night Lights.” Speaking to The Wrap at the Aug. 4 premiere of “The Terminal List: Dark Wolf,” Kitsch confirmed he was “asked to do” the new show but isn’t interested.

    “Yeah, I’m not going back,” he said, shaking his head.

    At the same event, Kitsch told “Access” he hasn’t spoken to his former “Friday Night Lights” costar Kyle Chandler about the project. But while he appears to have closed the door on a regular role in the reboot, Kitsch left open the possibility of a short appearance. “I’ll do a cameo,” he told “Access.” “I would do one. It’s got to be out of control, though.”

    Kitsch starred as Tim Riggins on the original “Friday Night Lights,” which centers on a high school football team in Texas and aired for five seasons from 2006 to 2011. It was based on the 1990 nonfiction book and 2004 film of the same name.

    In December, Peacock confirmed a “new adaptation” of “Friday Night Lights” is in the works. According to the streamer, the show would take place “in the aftermath of a devastating hurricane, when a ragtag high school football team and their damaged interim coach make an unlikely bid for a Texas High School State Championship. Through their unexpected rise, the football team becomes a beacon of light for their town.”

    Original series showrunner Jason Katims is returning for the new series, as is director Peter Berg and producer Brian Grazer. No casting for the reboot has been announced.

    In January, Kitsch said in an interview on SiriusXM that he had “been asked” to be a part of the show, and he said he was toying with the idea of popping up in one episode.

    “I’m always flattered,” he said. “Never say never. But I would come in and do something maybe for an episode or something, but I don’t want to go and do the whole thing.”

    For his part, Chandler, who played coach Eric Taylor on “Friday Night Lights,” told the “Today” show in January he hadn’t heard anything about the reboot and hadn’t received a call about reprising his role. Connie Britton, who played Eric’s wife Tami Taylor, also told Parade in a March interview that the new show is “barely on” her radar.
