New WhatsApp Tools and Tips to Beat Messaging Scams

Every day criminal scammers attempt to play on people’s economic anxiety to trick people with too-good-to-be-true offers and pyramid schemes to earn quick money. As part of our ongoing efforts to protect people from scams, we’re sharing updates on disrupting attempts by criminal scam centers to target people on our apps, the latest insights into how these scams work, new anti-scam tools on WhatsApp and key safety tips.

    Taking Action Against Scammers

Some of the most prolific sources of scams are criminal scam centers, often fueled by forced labor and operated by organized crime primarily in Southeast Asia. In the first six months of this year, as part of our ongoing proactive work to protect people from scams, WhatsApp detected and banned over 6.8 million accounts linked to scam centers. Based on our investigative insights into the latest enforcement efforts, we proactively detected and took down accounts before scam centers were able to operationalize them.

    How Scammers Operate

These scam centers typically run many scam campaigns at once – from cryptocurrency investments to pyramid schemes. There is always a catch and it should be a red flag for everyone: you have to pay upfront to get promised returns or earnings.

Scams may start with a text message or on a dating app, then move to social media, private messaging apps and ultimately payment or crypto platforms. In the course of just one scam, they often try to cycle people through many different platforms to ensure that any one service has only a limited view into the entire scam, making it more challenging to detect.

Working with Others to Protect People

As an example, recently WhatsApp, Meta and our peers at OpenAI disrupted scams efforts which we were able to link to a criminal scam center in Cambodia. These attempts ranged from offering payments for fake likes to enlisting others into a rent-a-scooter pyramid scheme, or luring people to invest in cryptocurrency. As OpenAI reported, the scammers used ChatGPT to generate the initial text message containing a link to a WhatsApp chat, and then quickly directed the target to Telegram where they were assigned a task of liking videos on TikTok. The scammers attempted to build trust in their scheme by sharing how much the target has already ‘earned’ in theory, before asking them to deposit money into a crypto account as the next task.

How do you recognize these scams and stay safe? We partnered with internet safety expert and ethical hacker Rachel Tobac to share how scammers may target people – and how to avoid them.

    New WhatsApp Anti-Scam Tools

In addition to disrupting scam centers, WhatsApp is constantly rolling out new features to help protect people on our apps from known scam tactics at scale.

Group messaging: We’re launching a new safety overview that we’ll show you when someone who is not in your contacts adds you to a new WhatsApp group you may not recognize. It will include key information about the group and tips to stay safe. From there, you can exit the group without ever having to look at the chat. And if you think you might recognize the group after seeing the safety overview, you can choose to see the chat for more context. Regardless, notifications from the group will be silenced until you mark that you want to stay.

Individual messaging: Additionally, scammers may attempt to first initiate contact with you elsewhere on the internet before asking to message them on private messengers like WhatsApp. To protect against this tactic, we continue to test new approaches to alerting people to pause before engaging. For example, we’re exploring ways to caution you when you start a chat with someone not in your contacts by showing you additional context about who you’re messaging so you can make an informed decision.

Tips to Avoid Scams in Private Messaging

We’ve all been there: someone you don’t know attempting to message you, or add you to a group chat, promising low-risk investment opportunities or easy money, or saying you have an unpaid bill that’s overdue. The reality is, these are often scammers trying to prey on people’s kindness, trust and willingness to help – or, their fears that they could be in trouble if they don’t send money fast.

We encourage you to pause, question, and verify, before responding to a suspicious or unusual message, especially if it’s from a number you don’t know promising fast money:

    • PAUSE: Take time before you respond. Think about whether this is a number you recognize, or whether it reads like a legitimate ask.
    • QUESTION: Does this request make sense? Does it seem too good to be true? Are they asking you to send money, gift cards or PIN codes? Are they offering unrealistically high pay for a few hours of work? Are they rushing you into taking action? These might be signs of a scam.
    • VERIFY: If they’re claiming to be a friend or family member, make sure that they are who they say they are by contacting that friend directly – ideally using another method of communication. For example, if they messaged you on WhatsApp, call them on their phone – or if they sent you an SMS, give them a WhatsApp call using the phone number you know is theirs.

Ex-Worcester cricketer in charity walk after anorexia battle

A former Worcestershire county cricketer who had to give up the sport due to anorexia has nearly completed an epic walking challenge from Land’s End to John O’ Groats.

Olivia Robinson, who grew up in Worcester, is visiting more than 70 cricket clubs along the way to raise money for charity Chance to Shine.

She said her cricket journey began in the city before she became unwell and made attempts on her life.

The walk, which she started on 5 June, was about raising money for the charity but also a “personal pilgrimage” to “once and for all say goodbye to all of that trauma”.

Ms Robinson, who now lives in Australia, said she hoped to raise £20,000 for the charity which helps young people through cricket, and to finish the challenge in 18 days.

Speaking to BBC Hereford and Worcester from the side of a loch in the Scottish Highlands she said she was on day 61 and has allowed herself one rest day a month – one in Worcester in June, then Leeds and her last one was in Edinburgh.

She said she had fond memories of Worcester.

“Of course, I played all my cricket there which is where this whole journey started, through cricket and living and growing up in Worcester,” she said.

She said went thought a district and county cricket set up in Worcester before she became unwell.

“Unfortunately, I became really unwell with anorexia and attempts on my life,” she said.

“I was poorly for about a decade, understandably lost my spot on the team.

“It was really hard to dig deep for about a decade, to find a reason to stay alive, but getting back to cricket and being part of the community, being part of a team, a feeling of elation when you win… that was my main incentive.”

Once she was healthy enough to get back on the cricket pitch, she said she “let go” of the illness and moved on.

“I’m very glad to say I still play cricket and I’m in the absolute best, healthiest mental and physical shape of my life – except probably not right now as I’m absolutely exhausted from walking 61 days,” she said.

“I just love the game of cricket and that’s what this walk is about.”

Visiting all the cricket clubs had been “incredible” she said, having reached more than 50 so far.

She added that her full-time job is a mural artist in Australia and she has also being drawing a cricket ball with a smiley face on in a secret place at every club she has visited on her travels.

  • Legal case a ‘seismic confrontation’ between players and Fifa

Legal case a ‘seismic confrontation’ between players and Fifa

“A seismic legal confrontation between players and Fifa.”

The view of former Fulham midfielder-turned-lawyer Udo Onwere when asked to assess the significance of the compensation claim launched against Fifa this week on behalf of current and former professional footballers over transfer rules.

On Monday, Dutch foundation Justice for Players (JFP) said it had started a class action lawsuit against the sport’s world governing body, along with the football associations of France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and Denmark.

It argues that 100,000 footballers playing in Europe since 2002 could have lost income as a result of “unlawful” Fifa regulations, and that “preliminary analysis” shows that damages could amount to several billion pounds.

The case is the result of last year’s ruling by the highest European court that Fifa regulations over some football transfers broke EU laws.

In October, the European Court of Justice (CJEU) found in favour of former Chelsea and Arsenal midfielder Lassana Diarra after he argued some of the rules restricted his freedom of movement and breached competition law, and sued Fifa.

“This class action could rewrite the rules governing player mobility across the global football industry” says Onwere, who is now a partner at law firm Bray and Krais.

“What distinguishes this case from previous skirmishes with the governing body is its sheer scale and complexity… The outcome of this litigation could usher in a new era of transfer regulations and governance – one where contractual stability is balanced with player autonomy.

“It could prove to be as transformational as the landmark 1995 Bosman ruling.”

Such a comparison is notable, because JFP is being advised by Diarra’s Belgian lawyer Jean-Louis Dupont, who also won the landmark 1995 case at the CJEU on behalf of ex-player Jean-Marc Bosman.

That ruling dramatically changed the sport, meaning footballers could choose to run down their contracts and move clubs on a free transfer, with teams no longer able to demand compensation for out-of-contract players.

Thirty years on, some now believe this latest case could result in players being able to terminate their own contracts, without paying compensation, before those deals come to an end.

BBC Sport has been told that Fifa has until the start of September to respond to the threat of legal action.

Pakistani Startup Myco Wins PKR 420M on Tim Draper’s Show

In a historic win for Pakistan’s tech scene, Myco, a fast-growing Pakistani-origin video streaming and Web3 startup, has secured PKR 420 million (USD 1.5 million) in total deals after winning Season 9 of “Meet the Drapers,” a globally recognized Silicon Valley startup show hosted by investor Tim Draper.

Outperforming 2,000+ startups worldwide, Myco not only became the first Pakistani-origin startup to reach the finale but also secured the highest investment and SaaS business deal of the season. The final deal includes $500,000 in direct investment and a $1 million SaaS contract, following an extensive due diligence process. The journey was made possible by PakLaunch, whose founder, Aly Fahd, convinced Draper to feature Pakistani startups for the first time in 2024. Myco’s victory highlights Pakistan’s rising potential in digital innovation, content streaming, and Web3 economies.

First-Ever Pakistani Startup to Win “Meet the Drapers”

Myco received the most global votes and advanced to the grand finale. The episode was recorded in April 2025, and the deal was finalized in July after due diligence. PakLaunch played a key role in this achievement. Its founder, Aly Fahd, convinced Tim Draper to feature Pakistani startups in 2024.

Tim Draper is a legendary Silicon Valley investor. He’s known for early investments in Tesla, SpaceX, and Coinbase. During Myco’s pitch, Draper called the platform “the future of streaming.” His support signals growing investor confidence in Pakistan.

    A Vision Beyond Cricket

    Myco holds streaming rights for:

    • ICC, PCB, and PSL cricket matches
    • English Premier League
    • MMA and Karate Combat
    • Padel, Squash, Volleyball

It aims to build a full sports and entertainment ecosystem, not just a streaming app.

Myco is launching a decentralized content economy. Users and creators will earn through a reward token system. This model supports content ownership, user engagement, and long-term monetization for both creators and fans.

“Myco’s win shows Pakistani entrepreneurs can compete globally,” said Umair Masoom, Founder & MD of Myco. “This is just the beginning,” he added.

‘A gift that keeps giving’: Inside the K-Pop Demon Hunters campaign with Republic & Island EMI | Labels

Last week the soundtrack to Netflix animated fantasy film K-Pop Demon Hunters spent its sixth consecutive week at No.1 in the compilations chart, while Golden, which is taken from the album, topped the singles chart.

Now, two of the executives leading the campaign – Jim Roppo, chairman and CEO at Republic Records, and Steve Pitron, SVP, Island EMI Label Group, International – have told Music Week that they are simply blown away by the film’s runaway success.

“There’s no one that could tell you they predicted this,” said Roppo. “Our partners Savan Kotecha and Spring Aspers at Sony Pictures introduced us to this amazing project and we were immediately on board.”

Republic Records is working the campaign through a JV with Visva Records, the new label behind the soundtrack, which was founded by hitmaker Savan Kotecha. Island EMI Label Group is working the release in the UK.

“Golden is an anthem of self-acceptance and empowerment that feels like it’s already taken the crown for song of the summer and is still growing at a phenomenal rate,” added Steve Pitron. “The school holidays really couldn’t have come at a better time!”

Three of the songs on the OST made the singles Top 10 last week, while the album’s sales reached a new weekly peak of 16,176 units (370 digital downloads and 15,806 sales-equivalent streams). Its to-date tally is now 64,357 units, according to the Official Charts Company.

Golden became the first song from a movie to top the chart since Dua Lipa’s Dance The Night in 2023, Golden hit No.1 thanks to 42,853 sales (1,073 digital downloads and 41,780 sales-equivalent streams), a 34.69% surge, week-on-week.

Golden is credited to Huntr/X, Ejae, Audrey Nuna, Rei Ami & K-Pop Demon Hunters Cast, but is effectively a song by fictional K-Pop group Huntr/X, whose real life members are Ejae, Audrey Nuna and Rei Ami. Our analysis reported that Huntr/X are now the first female ‘group’ – three or more members – to have a No.1 single since Little Mix in 2021.

Golden wasn’t the only track from the album in last week’s singles Top 75: Your Idol hit No.10 (25,132 sales) and Soda Pop was at No.11 (24,868 sales).  Both are credited to Saja Boys, Andrew Choi, Neckwav, Danny Chung, Kevin Woo, Samuil Lee & K-Pop Demon Hunters Cast. Four more songs from the album were ‘starred-out’ of the Top 75.

Here, we quiz Jim Roppo and Steve Pitron on the campaign so far and ask what’s next for the franchise.

The album has been performing well for some weeks now, did you expect to see the singles doing so well?

Jim Roppo: “We prepared for the film to have some success, but once the film was out I noticed my kids watching on repeat and began sounding the alarms internally and with all our partners that we have something truly special here. Week after week it continues to surprise us in the best ways, but that is where Republic thrives, immediately activating our partners across the board in undeniable pop culture moments like this. Now we are breaking records with our amazing label partners from Island EMI in ways I don’t think we even knew were possible.”

Steve Pitron: “At its core, it’s an incredible film that appeals to all ages; with its engaging story line, wonderful characters, beautiful animation, all under-pinned by brilliant music which resonates with both K-Pop fans and broader audiences. These songs not only serve as a strong soundtrack within the movie but also stand up in their own right, which has helped us focus on them in the same way we would with any other artist’s music. The film instantly generated a huge fanbase who immediately jumped in creating fan art, cosplay, and dance covers shared online, which helped build further awareness as playlisting and radio support then exploded. You cannot move without seeing or hearing this wherever you go at the moment.”

We are breaking records in ways I don’t think we even knew was possible

    Jim Roppo, Republic

Golden is from a soundtrack album by a fictional band – this must be a unique campaign to work on based on that alone? What’s it been like to be part of?

JR: “Very unique, but that is what makes this project so special. We are breaking records in ways I don’t think we even knew was possible. We are watching a viral song of summer continue to grow at a phenomenal rate and we aren’t letting off the gas.”

SP: “It’s been an interesting few weeks working a project like this, but thankfully we have been in safe hands with Island EMI’s Christina Incocciati [head of international] and Max Lutkin [marketing] steering the project, both come with a wealth of knowledge and experience from working similar projects, most recently Wicked. I also have to shout out Phil Blackler, Florence James and the rest of the incredible streaming and commerce team who have also left no stone unturned in their efforts to ensure this became the success it is.”

You cannot move without seeing or hearing this wherever you go at the moment

Will this open the floodgates for more K Pop in the singles chart?

JR: “We are seeing K-Pop Demon Hunters raise all tides in the K-Pop space. You can see it with Twice, who already have global success on their own, but their participation in the film has brought them to the attention of millions of new fans experiencing the genre for the first time. Their single Strategy has re-entered the charts and continues to grow week on week.”

What’s next for the franchise and what lessons have you learned from this campaign so far?

JR: “Our focus remains on the soundtrack, we believe there are many more ways for us to continue sharing this special project. K-Pop Demon Hunters is a gift that keeps giving, and we will continue to be surprised at the new heights it will reach.”

SP: “I think it’s fair to say the world is waiting for news of what’s next for Rumi, Mira and Zoey aka Demon Hunters! One would hope there is a Part 2. I am excited to see how we can further bring the characters out of the movie to live in the real world!”
