  • Ozempic, Wegovy linked to dangerous pancreas inflammation, nearly 400 cases reported in UK – Healthcare News

Ozempic, Wegovy linked to dangerous pancreas inflammation, nearly 400 cases reported in UK – Healthcare News

GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro have become widely popular for helping people lose weight and manage type 2 diabetes. While these medications have been praised for their life-changing effects, experts are now raising concerns about some rare but serious side effects.

In the UK, health regulators have received nearly 400 reports of serious pancreas issues, including a painful condition called acute pancreatitis, among people using GLP-1 drugs. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), which collects and monitors drug safety through its “Yellow Card” system, is now urging caution and calling for further research.

    What is acute pancreatitis?

Acute pancreatitis is a sudden inflammation of the pancreas, a gland behind the stomach that helps with digestion and blood sugar control. The condition can cause severe stomach pain, nausea, and fever, and often requires hospital treatment.

In most cases, patients recover with medical care, but it can turn serious or even fatal if complications arise. According to UK health officials, at least ten deaths have been linked to this condition among users of GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic and Mounjaro.

Drug pamphlets mention that pancreatitis is rare, affecting about 1 in 100 users, but the new findings have led to increased attention on the need for monitoring and early warning signs.

“Sometimes genes can influence the side effects an individual experiences when taking a medicine,” said a spokesperson from MHRA, suggesting that genetic screening in the future might help identify people at higher risk.

What do the drug makers say?

Pharmaceutical companies involved in making GLP-1 drugs say they are taking the issue seriously.

“Patient safety is our top priority,” said Lilly, the manufacturer of Mounjaro.

“We recommend that patients take these medications only under the supervision of a healthcare professional,” said Novo Nordisk, which produces Ozempic and Wegovy.

Both companies say they are closely monitoring safety data and working with regulators to ensure risks remain low.

Is this problem only in the UK?

No. Though US regulators like the FDA have not yet started a formal investigation, they do require warning labels on all GLP-1 drugs about the risk of acute pancreatitis. They are also keeping a close watch on reports of side effects.

In the US, a 36-year-old woman reportedly developed pancreatitis just five weeks after starting semaglutide (the active ingredient in Ozempic). A 2024 analysis showed 6,751 global cases of acute pancreatitis linked to GLP-1 drugs between 2005 and 2023.

One study even found that patients using these medications were twice as likely to develop the condition if they had taken the drug in the previous 30 days.

While the benefits of GLP-1 drugs are still considered to outweigh the risks for many people, experts advise using them only under medical supervision. If you are on Ozempic or a similar medication and experience symptoms like severe stomach pain or nausea, it’s important to seek medical attention right away.

Doctors and patients alike are now being urged to watch for warning signs and make informed choices about these powerful drugs.

  • Methane gas kills 12 Turkish soldiers in Iraq operation

Methane gas kills 12 Turkish soldiers in Iraq operation

Twelve Turkish soldiers have died after being exposed to methane gas while searching a cave in northern Iraq, the Turkish Ministry of National Defence said.

At least 19 personnel were exposed to the gas during the search and clear operation on Sunday, and immediately taken to hospital. By Monday, 12 had died, the ministry said.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he received the news with “great sorrow” and extended his condolences to the soldiers’ families and to the Turkish Armed Forces.

Methane gas is not directly toxic, but can be deadly as it can become suffocating, especially in tight, enclosed spaces.

It remains unclear why the cave contained enough methane gas to make it lethal.

A farewell ceremony for some of the soldiers killed was held at an airport in the southern Turkish province of Hakkari on Monday. It was attended by the Turkish defence minister and many high-ranking officials from the armed forces.

The bodies were then transported back to their home towns.

The soldiers were searching for the body of a soldier who was killed in gunfire in May 2022 during Operation Claw Lock – a military operation led by Turkey against militants from the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in Iraq which included air strikes on caves as well as a ground incursion.

The PKK – which is banned as a terrorist group in Turkey, the EU, UK and US – has waged a 40-year insurgency against Turkey.

The group’s initial aim when it began fighting with Turkey in the 1980s was to create an independent home for Kurds. It then moved away from its separatist goals, focusing instead on more autonomy and greater Kurdish rights.

Over the last four decades more than 40,000 people have been killed in the conflict.

In March, the PKK declared a ceasefire and in May said it would disband, stating it had “completed its historical mission” and would “end the method of armed struggle.”

In the first significant step towards peace since the announcement, the PKK said a group of fighters will lay down arms this week in Iraqi Kurdistan.

  • BioMar raises vitamin D in salmon feed

BioMar raises vitamin D in salmon feed

The change follows internal research confirming that higher dietary vitamin D3 results in a proportional increase in fillet vitamin D content, without negatively affecting feed intake, conversion rates, or fish performance.

In 2019, the European Union increased the maximum permitted vitamin D₃ level in salmonid aquafeed from 2,500 to 60,000 IU/kg, following EFSA’s assessment that this higher dose was safe for salmonids. However, due to limited data, the change did not apply to other fish species. Following this, BioMar explored the effects of increased supplementation on fish health and fillet composition, finding improvements in both welfare and consumer nutritional value.

“Vitamin D is crucial for fish health, supporting bone development, calcium regulation and immune function. Our research confirms that feeds with optimised vitamin D3 levels enriched fillet vitamin D content while maintaining an optimal fish performance,” said Pedro Gómez Requeni, senior R&D scientist at BioMar, in a press release.

Salmon farmers using BioMar feed will now benefit from diets that support robust fish growth while naturally producing fillets with higher vitamin D levels, aligning with consumer demand for nutrient-rich functional foods.

“Consumers are becoming more aware of the importance of vitamin D for their health,’’ added Simon Wadsworth, R&D Director at BioMar. ‘’By formulating feeds that naturally enrich fish fillets, we are helping farmers offer products with added value and supporting public health goals.”

According to BioMar, the enhanced vitamin D3 content in salmon fillets will contribute to increased dietary intake for consumers, helping to address widespread vitamin D insufficiency. The company sees this as a meaningful way to support fish health, deliver added value to farmers and respond to growing consumer interest in nutrient-rich foods.

Euro 2025: Jess Fishlock on Wales’ Netherlands loss & France test

Fishlock believes the key to Wales shocking France will be nullifying their threat and picking their moments to strike, having failed to register a shot on target in their opening match.

“France are a great team,” she added. “They’ll cause us different problems to Holland. They’re very powerful, very comfortable on the ball, love wide areas.

“They’re very good but we can be very good too and we just have to work together and nullify them as much as possible and then try and expose them with the players that we have. So we’ll be doing a lot of work on that, I’m sure.

“We don’t have to win it in the first five minutes. We have to stay in it as long as possible and use the players that we have. We have some fantastic players that can cause damage to any team.”

Wales have received a boost for the game against France with the news that midfielder Ceri Holland is fit to start.

The Liverpool midfielder was substituted against Netherlands after going down with what appeared to be a muscular injury, but it was only cramp and Holland has said she is “ready to go”.

  • 3 cops injured in blast on highway police vehicle in Balochistan’s Nasirabad – Pakistan

3 cops injured in blast on highway police vehicle in Balochistan’s Nasirabad – Pakistan

Three cops were injured in an attack on a highway police vehicle in Balochistan’s Nasirabad District on Monday, an official said.

Pakistan is ranked second in the Global Terrorism Index 2025. Terrorists in Balochistan, previously engaged in a low-level insurgency, have recently intensified their attacks. The banned Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) emerged as a key perpetrator of terrorist violence in Pakistan in 2024.

“Three personnel were injured in a blast targeting a patrolling vehicle of the highway police in Nasirabad’s Rabbi area,” Highway Police’s Senior Superintendent of Police Khadim Husain said.

He added that the incident took place when the highway police team was patrolling the area as per routine.

Citing preliminary reports, Husain said the blast was conducted through a remote-controlled device. The injured were immediately taken to a hospital in the Dera Murad Jamali town, located 12km from Rabbi, the SSP added.

“The police have initiated an investigation,” SSP Husain said.

In June, Pakistan witnessed a slight overall decline in militant violence during June 2025 despite several high-profile attacks, according to data released by an Islamabad-based think tank, Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (Picss).

Over a week ago, security forces killed two terrorists during an operation in Balochistan’s Duki district.

Earlier this month, security forces eliminated two “India-backed” terrorists after an attack on government offices in the Mastung district killed a teenager and injured seven others.

On June 21, two personnel of the Frontier Corps were martyred and four were injured in a bomb attack in Kalat’s Mongochar area. In a separate attack in Kalat, a CTD officer was gunned down by unknown armed men, while a police official was among two killed in Mastung.

In May, four people were injured when unidentified motorcyclists threw a grenade at a house in Nasirabad. In March, Nasirabad police claimed to have foiled a sabotage attempt ahead of the Pakistan Day celebrations and seized explosives.

‘Shorts and flip-flops are not allowed’: La Scala enforces opera dress code ban | Italy

Operagoers have been warned they will be banned from entering Milan’s prestigious La Scala theatre if they turn up wearing shorts, tank tops or flip-flops. Kimonos, however, are acceptable.

The venue’s management team reminded people how not to dress for an opera after complaints that some spectators were donning attire more suitable for the beach.

A “rules of conduct” sign has been placed at La Scala’s entrance urging its audience to “choose clothing in keeping with the decorum of the theatre”, adding that “spectators wearing tank tops, shorts and flip-flops are not allowed”. Those who arrive inappropriately dressed will not be given a refund. The message has also been placed on tickets and the opera house’s website.

The anti-beachwear dress code was introduced in 2015, the year Milan hosted the World Expo and La Scala stayed open for the entire summer, as a way to stop people from turning up in swimming costumes.

But until now it has never been strictly enforced, partly because of calls for more tolerance over attire by La Scala’s former French director, Dominique Meyer, who in his youth was criticised by fellow spectators at Paris Opera productions for his “worker’s look”. Meyer later became the general director of the opera company.

“The rules now need to be reinforced, especially due to the heat we’ve been experiencing,” said a spokesperson for La Scala. “Some spectators were getting annoyed after seeing others not dress appropriately, for example in flip-flops, especially in a theatre where people are sitting shoulder to shoulder.”

The tank top ban does not prohibit women from wearing sleeveless blouses or dresses, and, according to the Corriere della Sera newspaper, the flip-flop ban does not prevent “Japanese spectators with kimonos and traditional footwear” from entering.

Before 2015, there was a message on La Scala tickets recommending a “jacket and tie”, although the formal dress code was not obligatory. However, there is an unspoken rule that people should at least be elegantly clothed.

“It is incorrect to tell people how to dress, but they do need to be dressed,” the spokesperson said.

The dress code reminder is part of a broader overhaul on etiquette rules at La Scala. Spectators are banned from bringing their own food and drink and from taking photos and filming during performances. In addition, operagoers must not place their mobile phones on the balustrade of balcony boxes after one fell off and hit a spectator seated below.

Shell lowers second-quarter gas output guidance, warns of weaker trading results

Energy major Shell on Monday lowered its production guidance for its integrated gas division across the second quarter and warned of weaker results from its gas and chemicals trading units.

In a trading update released ahead of its second-quarter financial results, the firm said it now expects integrated gas output to be in a range of 900,000 to 940,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d), compared with a 890,000 to 950,000 boe/d guidance for the period issued during the company’s first-quarter results outlook.

The world’s largest trader of liquified natural gas anticipates second-quarter LNG volumes to come in between 6.4 million and 6.8 million metric tons, also below a previous estimate of 6.3 million to 6.9 million metric tons.

Shell warned of “significantly lower” trading results in the second quarter, compared with the previous three-month period, for both its integrated gas division and its chemicals and products unit, where it anticipates to be “below break-even” over the period.

“We see the release as weak; the weaker trading performance was likely expected, however the trading update points to a significantly worse performance in the downstream than anticipated,” RBC Capital Markets analysts said in a note. “Shell has issued successive positive trading updates over the last couple of years, and it looks like the positive streak has been broken.”

Shell shares were down 2.18% at 08:13 a.m. London time after the release.
